Cimarron Hills Pro-Am Registration is Now Open!

The Southern Texas PGA is proud to host the 6th Annual Cimarron Hills Pro-Am, benefiting the J.L. Lewis Memorial Scholarship and PGA REACH Southern Texas. This event honors J.L. Lewis’s legacy by supporting scholarships for high school and college golfers, with more than $102,000 awarded to date.

2026 DRIVE, CHIP & PUTT CHAMPIONS

A huge congratulations to our 2026 Drive, Chip & Putt National Finalists for representing the Southern Texas PGA on the national stage! Texas Terry delivered an outstanding performance, earning first overall in the Boys 12–13 Division, while Rachel Turk shined among the nation’s best with a second-place finish in the Girls 14–15 Division. Chloe Magwe also turned in an impressive performance, securing third overall in the Girls 10–11 Division. We are incredibly proud of their hard work, dedication, and the way they represented STPGA, what an amazing accomplishment for all three players!

SPRING CHAMPIONSHIP

Invitations to the 2026 STPGA Spring Championship were sent out on Monday to Little Linksters, Junior Links, and Junior Tour golfers who earned the opportunity to compete through their performances in the Spring Season.

The championship will be held at Forest Creek Golf Club this weekend, May 2-3. We wish all junior golfers the best of luck! Click below for more tournament information.

The 2026 College Scholarships Application Period has Officially Closed!

Thank you so much to all who applied for our 2026 College Scholarship Program!

As our trustees begin reviewing the applications, we’re proud to be part of supporting individuals in their pursuit of education. Each application tells a unique story, full of aspirations and potential, and we’re excited to carefully consider them all.

Stay tuned as we work through the process, striving to empower deserving individuals on their academic journeys. Together, we’re making a difference in lives through golf, helping juniors advance their education and move closer to their dreams!

The Hannon-Fields Champions Society plays a vital role in supporting student-athletes through the PGA REACH Southern Texas scholarship program. Named for longtime PGA Members Coach George Hannon and Coach John Fields, the group is the largest scholarship trustee organization supporting our initiatives. Led by Steve Termeer, PGA, its members—local business leaders, PGA Professionals, and community advocates—have contributed more than $800,000 in scholarships since 2006, helping junior golfers pursue higher education and succeed beyond the game. We are incredibly excited for 50 of our PGA HOPE Southern Texas Graduates to have the opportunity to participate in this year's Valero Texas Open PGA HOPE Clinic on Wednesday, April 1st. These Graduates will experience a behind-the-scenes look at how PGA TOUR and PGA of America Professionals prepare and perform at one of the premier events on the PGA TOUR.

A big thank you to Danny Yeargin, PGA and TPC San Antonio for making this opportunity happen for our Veterans and Active-Duty Military involved in PGA HOPE.

Valero Texas Open PGA HOPE Clinic

PGA HOPE | Mizuno Initiative

PGA HOPE Southern Texas is excited to participate in the national PGA HOPE | Mizuno Rental initiative. This program supports our local PGA HOPE sites by providing high-quality Mizuno golf clubs at no cost for Veterans to use during sessions.

Approximately 25% of PGA HOPE participants do not have their own clubs, and many who do are using subpar equipment—so this initiative helps fill a significant need. We are grateful that eight PGA HOPE Southern Texas facilities have been selected to take part, and we look forward to the impact it will have across our PGA HOPE community.

JUNIOR GOLF

Spring break is now behind us which means all attention is now on the summer season that will hold more than 250 events across 125 different golf courses! Schedules for Little Linksters, Junior Links, and Junior Tour are now viewable, as well as the Srixon Prestige Tour schedule through the end of 2026.

Registration for the summer opens at 9 A.M. on March 31! June registration for the Srixon Prestige Tour opens on April 7.

Dick Harmon Participation Grant Application Period Now Closed

The second application period for the 2026 Dick Harmon Participation Grant officially closed this morning at 9 AM! Started by the Harmon Family in honor of longtime PGA Member Dick Harmon, this program aims to provide top golf opportunities to junior golfers in Southern Texas who are limited due to financial constraints.

Thank you to all applied to receive financial support through this incredible program. The next application period will begin June 8th, 2026.

Annual Gary Patterson Memorial Palooza Fuels Another Year of Gary Patterson Scholarships

HOUSTON, TX – PGA REACH Southern Texas is proud to announce that the Annual Gary Patterson Memorial Palooza at East River 9 raised $37,200 this year to support another cycle of Gary Patterson Memorial Scholarships. The event, held in memory of Patterson, brought together community members, supporters, and golfers to carry forward his commitment to helping young adults who may not have the financial means to pursue continuing education.

Established to honor Patterson’s life and legacy, the Memorial Palooza has grown into a cornerstone fundraising event that expands access to the game for youth across Southern Texas. The scholarships supported through this event help remove financial barriers for young athletes seeking personal development, academic advancement, and sustained engagement in the sport.

Funds raised will directly support scholarship recipients in the 2026 cycle. The Gary Patterson Memorial Scholarship Program provides assistance to junior golfers who demonstrate strong character, academic dedication, and meaningful involvement in the game of golf.

Miles Fore the Future Spotlight: Nick Madden to Run the TCS NYC Marathon for PGA REACH

The Cordillera Ranch Head Professional represents the Southern Texas Section while inspiring others through the game of golf

SPRING, TX (October 27, 2025) – The marathon captures what it means to chase a goal that’s bigger than yourself—mile by mile, proving the power of commitment. This November, Southern Texas PGA Professional Nick Madden, Head Golf Professional at The Clubs of Cordillera Ranch, will take on this challenge as he competes in the 2025 TCS New York City Marathon as part of Running for REACH, an initiative supporting the PGA of America REACH Foundation.

Madden joins fifteen PGA of America Members and one PGA HOPE Veteran Ambassador representing twelve PGA Sections nationwide. Together, they are raising awareness and funds to further the PGA REACH Foundation’s mission of impacting lives through golf—focusing on Youth, Military, and Employment programs that make the game accessible to all.

For Madden, this race is about more than the 26.2 miles through New York’s five boroughs—it’s about using his platform as a PGA Professional to give back and inspire others.

In an interview with the PGA of America, Madden shared what motivated him to take on this challenge:

“Growing up in the game, I never had programs like PGA Jr. League,” Madden said. “Seeing how big and successful those programs are today shows how powerful golf can be. The PGA of America REACH Foundation is creating opportunities for people everywhere to enjoy the game as they are, and that inspired me to run for the larger mission of REACH.”

While golf came first for Madden, running has become a personal challenge rooted in family inspiration. His father’s own fitness transformation and commitment to running races has served as motivation for Nick to pursue new goals.

“When my dad started running, he told himself he’d never finish last again,” Madden told the PGA of America. “Since then, he’s completed countless races, and seeing him challenge himself inspired me to do the same. Having him alongside me in this journey means a lot—it’s something really special.”

As a first-time marathoner, Madden has balanced his training with a demanding schedule at Cordillera Ranch. Using training tools like the Runna app and cross-training with Peloton rides and yoga, he’s stayed consistent and prepared for the challenge ahead.

“This will be my first-ever marathon, so I figured—why not go big and run New York City?” he added. “We’re a group of PGA Professionals showing that we’re not just golfers—we’re capable of so much more. It’s meaningful to represent my Section and my club while supporting something bigger than myself.”

While funds raised through Running for REACH benefit the national PGA of America REACH Foundation, Madden’s journey is also shining a light on PGA REACH Southern Texas and its Miles Fore the Future campaign. Miles Fore the Future was created to drive both fundraising and awareness, celebrating Southern Texas PGA runners—whether they’re tackling local 5Ks or world-renowned marathons. These runners showcase the heart and passion behind PGA REACH Southern Texas. Nick’s run serves as a reminder that every mile, like every swing, can help grow the game and its impact in communities across the Section.

Scholarship Spotlight: Payton & Preston Hiller

"The STPGA is something that my entire family is involved in and is something that has always been around our lives." – Payton Hiller

Congratulations to Payton and Preston Hiller, 2025 PGA REACH Southern Texas Scholarship Recipients!

This year, Payton was awarded the Energy Transfer Scholarship, while Preston received the J.L. Lewis Scholarship— a well-deserved recognition for two brothers whose lifelong connection to the game of golf and the STPGA has shaped their paths both on and off the course.

For the Hillers, golf has always been more than a game—it’s a family tradition. Growing up with their dad, Greg Hiller, a PGA Member, Payton and Preston spent countless days at the course, learning lessons that extended far beyond their swings. From their early days in Little Linksters, to advancing through the Junior Tour and Prestige Tour, the brothers have grown up in the STPGA, developing a deep appreciation for competition, camaraderie, and the community that surrounds the game.

Payton, now competing on the University of Mary golf team, is known for his discipline and commitment to improvement. Whether in school or on the course, he approaches every challenge with focus and resilience. His drive to learn — whether through extra practice after tournaments or through leadership and service at his church— reflects a maturity and work ethic that continues to set him apart. Payton credits golf with teaching him the value of patience, perseverance, and continuous self-improvement, lessons that now guide him at the collegiate level.

Preston, currently playing college golf at Sam Houston State University, is pursuing a degree in PGA Golf Management, combining his passion for the game with a vision for a career in the golf industry. A proud Eagle Scout and dedicated student, he has long demonstrated leadership, integrity, and a strong sense of purpose. Through years of competition with the STPGA, Preston has learned how to thrive under pressure, build relationships, and appreciate the opportunities that golf provides—on the course and beyond.

Together, Payton and Preston embody the spirit of the STPGA: hard work, humility, and heart. Their journeys are a testament to the values the game instills and the community that continues to inspire them. As they pursue their academic and athletic dreams, we’re proud to celebrate their achievements and look forward to seeing all they accomplish in the years ahead.

5th Annual Golf Club of Houston Invitational Powers Another Year of Charlie Epps Scholarships

Charlie Epps’s Legacy in Southern Texas Golf Continues with a Record-Breaking Fundraising Event!

HOUSTON, TX – The spirit of golf and community came together in a powerful way at the 5th Annual Golf Club of Houston Invitational, where every swing, putt, and handshake was in support of something bigger than the game itself. Thanks to the incredible generosity of our partners, sponsors, and players, all proceeds from this year’s tournament will go directly toward funding the 2026 Charlie Epps College Scholarships through PGA REACH Southern Texas.

Since the event began, the Invitational has raised more than $160,000 to help students chase their dreams of higher education. Each dollar raised reflects the values Charlie Epps, PGA, has dedicated his life to — using golf as a way to teach, mentor, and open doors for young people. The scholarships not only honor his extraordinary legacy but also ensure his passion for shaping lives continues to grow with each new generation.

Charlie Epps has been a cornerstone of the Houston golf community since 1973, shaping the game at the Golf Club of Houston, Houston Country Club, and Pine Forest Country Club. Known for coaching world-class players like Ángel Cabrera and Blaine McCallister, as well as hosting The Charlie Epps Golf Hour, his greatest legacy may be the countless lives he has touched through his teaching and mentorship. Among the most decorated professionals in the Southern Texas PGA, Charlie’s story is a testament to the power of golf to inspire, uplift, and unite.

The 2nd Annual HOPE Cup Showcases the Healing Power of Golf and the Strength of Community

HOUSTON, TX (September 10, 2025) - The Southern Texas PGA (STPGA) proudly hosted the 2nd Annual STPGA HOPE Cup on Monday, September 8, 2025, at The Quarry Golf Course in San Antonio. This special event once again brought together PGA HOPE (Helping Our Patriots Everywhere) Southern Texas graduates for a day of golf, camaraderie, and celebration of service.

The tournament brought together 55 PGA HOPE graduates and instructors from across Southern Texas, representing multiple branches of the U.S. Armed Forces. Each graduate teamed up with their PGA HOPE Instructor—the Professionals who have supported them throughout their journey—showcasing the powerful role golf plays in building healing, connection, and resilience.

The day kicked off with an inspiring Opening Ceremony, featuring the James Madison High School JROTC Cadets with the Presentation of Colors, followed by a moving performance of the National Anthem by Jefferson Clay. With spirits high, the field then teed off in a shotgun start, competing in a team-based format designed to highlight both camaraderie and competition.

After another exciting and close competition, it was once again Team Golf Club of Texas who claimed victory, successfully defending their title. The team, led by Jamie Smith, PGA Director of Instruction, showed strong play and teamwork throughout the afternoon to capture back-to-back HOPE Cup wins.

This year’s event was made possible thanks to the support of its Presenting Partners: J.L. Lewis Golf and Zedcor Security Solutions. Special recognition goes to Dustin Burrell, PGA, Miguel Amaya, and the entire Quarry Golf Course staff for their hospitality and hard work in making the day a success.

The STPGA HOPE Cup continues to grow as an annual tradition, honoring our veterans and showcasing the unique role golf can play in rehabilitation, community, and lifelong well-being.

Back for its second year, this elite event celebrates the top performers from the Srixon Prestige Tour season—bringing together 76 of the best junior golfers for a true championship showdown.

Through this initiative, runners pledge to complete races while raising money for PGA REACH Southern Texas programs such as junior golf, college scholarships, and PGA HOPE. Donors can pledge a dollar amount per mile to support a specific runner and make a direct difference.

Scholarship Spotlight: Isabella Carter

“Throughout my junior career, countless STPGA staff members have shaped my love for the game—but beyond golf, they’ve been some of my biggest supporters in life.”

Congratulations to Isabella Carter, a 2025 recipient of the Gary Patterson Scholarship! A lifelong member of the STPGA family, Isabella’s journey in golf began before she could even walk—riding along in a golf cart with her dad. Since then, she’s grown into a standout junior golfer whose passion for the game has shaped not only her swing, but also her character, work ethic, and future goals.

This fall, Isabella will attend Tulane University in New Orleans, where she plans to study psychology while continuing to compete in collegiate golf. From Little Linksters to the Prestige Tour, Isabella has been a consistent and committed presence in the STPGA. Along the way, she’s formed lasting relationships with staff and mentors like Jesse Saavedra, Troy Frederick, Paul Herring, and Connor Murphy—individuals she credits for supporting her through both triumphs and setbacks.

Golf has always been more than a sport to Isabella. It’s taught her how to manage pressure, recover from mistakes, and stay mentally tough—lessons she now applies in every part of her life. Her academic interest in psychology was sparked in part by her experience as an athlete. She’s especially drawn to performance theories that help explain how stress and adrenaline impact play, and she’s used that knowledge to refine her mental game.

Isabella has also made an impact off the course. Whether it’s leading student groups at school or volunteering through her church, she brings the same dedication and heart to everything she does. But at the center of it all is her love for golf and the community that has supported her along the way.

We’re proud to recognize Isabella with the Gary Patterson Scholarship as she takes the next step in her journey. With her commitment to the game, academic drive, and strong sense of purpose, there’s no doubt she’ll continue to represent the STPGA community with excellence.

The 2nd Annual PGA HOPE Cup Returns to Southern Texas!

SPRING, TX (July 24, 2025) – The Southern Texas PGA is proud to announce the 2nd Annual STPGA HOPE Cup, taking place on Monday, September 8, 2025 at The Quarry Golf Course in San Antonio, Texas. This inspiring event brings together PGA HOPE graduates, PGA of America Professionals, and community supporters to celebrate the power of golf in the lives of Veterans.

PGA HOPE (Helping Our Patriots Everywhere) is the flagship military program of the PGA of America, designed to introduce golf to Veterans and Active Duty Military personnel as a means to enhance their physical, mental, social, and emotional well-being. PGA HOPE Southern Texas delivers this programming at no cost, using the game of golf to foster healing, connection, and purpose.

The 2025 STPGA HOPE Cup will be played as a 9-hole scramble at The Quarry Golf Course, featuring a 1:30 PM shotgun start, followed by dinner and an awards ceremony. Each team will consist of four PGA HOPE graduates and one PGA/LPGA Professional Lead.

“We’re honored to return with the STPGA HOPE Cup for its second year,” said Sarah Lummus, Foundation Coordinator of the Southern Texas PGA. “This event is a powerful reminder of the impact PGA HOPE has made—and continues to make—in the lives of Veterans across our region.”

Located in the heart of San Antonio, The Quarry Golf Course provides a dramatic and historic backdrop for this meaningful event, with the course’s unique design and rich history setting the stage for a day of camaraderie, gratitude, and celebration.

PGA Reach Southern Texas Launches Miles Fore the Future Campaign

Support the Movement as STPGA Staff are Running For A Cause

PGA REACH Southern Texas is proud to officially launch Miles Fore the Future, a unique new fundraising campaign that transforms every mile run into life-changing impact.

Supporters can get in on the action by pledging a donation for each mile their chosen runner completes—whether it’s $1, $5, or more—and watch their progress as they race toward both finish lines and fundraising goals. It’s a fun, personal way to support scholarships, youth golf, and veterans, one mile at a time.

In this first phase, the campaign is powered entirely by STPGA staff, who are running races across Texas to raise funds for all four pillars of our Foundation. From junior golf to college scholarships to PGA HOPE to employment opportunities, we want to continue to impact lives through golf.

Supporters can pledge a dollar amount per mile of their chosen runner's upcoming race or make a flat donation to the campaign as a whole. Donations will directly fuel youth development, veteran rehabilitation, and educational opportunities through the game of golf.

“This isn’t just a run—it’s a mission,” said Sarah Lummus, Foundation Coordinator and Miles Fore the Future Founder. “Our staff is leading the way, and now we’re asking our community to rally behind them with every mile.”

Each runner has a personalized campaign page where supporters can read their story, see their race details, and make a pledge or donation. All pages are accessible through the central Miles Fore the Future site, where supporters can explore the team, choose who to support, and stay connected to the campaign’s progress throughout the season.

The first official race took place at the Houston Stars & Stripes Race, where STPGA team members ran the 10K and Half Marathon distances to kick off the campaign!

While Miles Fore the Future currently features only STPGA staff, the campaign will expand to allow all PGA of America Members & Associates in Southern Texas and adult supporters who want to get involved. Any race. Any pace. All for a cause.

Where Are They Now? Past Intern Spotlight: Stephen Boyd

From Fairways to Film: How Stephen Boyd Turned His Passion for Golf into a Creative Career

Stephen Boyd’s journey into the golf industry has always been shaped by two things: a deep love for the game and a creative eye for storytelling. A former collegiate golfer at Prairie View A&M University, Stephen brought both passions together during his time as a Digital Media Intern for the Southern Texas PGA in the Fall of 2022.

While at the STPGA, Stephen supported the communications team in creating content for social media, filming and editing recap videos, and producing graphics for events and sponsors. His work spanned junior golf events across the region, with much of his time spent capturing the excitement of players on the Prestige Tour and helping showcase the experience of STPGA tournaments to a wide audience.

His internship experience laid the groundwork for a career that would keep him close to the game, while also allowing him to flex his creativity. After completing his internship and earning a degree in Digital Communication and Media, Stephen stepped into a new role as Communications Manager at Westwood Golf Club, where he leads the club’s content and media efforts. He also launched his own creative company, WiNLHO Media Productions, to take on freelance projects and expand his work in digital storytelling.

At Westwood, Stephen is responsible for managing the club’s digital presence, overseeing social media platforms, and creating photo and video content that highlights the club’s events, culture, and membership experience. His current role allows him to stay immersed in golf while continuing to build on the digital media skills he first developed during his time with the STPGA.

Stephen has started his own business, WiNLHO Media Productions. WiNLHO specializes in both long-form and short-form media content creation, with an emphasis on sports. The company also provides other services like editing, photography, and graphic design. Most notably, Stephen is currently the editor for the LPGA's "Swing Like a Pro" series.

Stephen’s path is a testament to how the STPGA internship program can help launch careers in all corners of the golf industry, including the ever-growing world of digital media.. From on-site filming and editing to post-production and storytelling, the experience gave him the confidence and experience to transition into a full-time creative role within the industry.

Some of Stephen’s favorite parts of the internship included traveling to different courses, working closely with the communications staff, and seeing the direct impact his content had on players and families. The fast-paced environment and variety of events helped him grow quickly and set him up for success in his current position.

Scholarship Spotlight: Tyler Neidel

"Receiving this scholarship motivates me to work even harder and push for my dreams."

Congratulations to Tyler Neidel, a 2025 recipient of the George Hannon Scholarship! A longtime STPGA participant, Tyler has shown incredible dedication to both his academics and the game of golf, and we’re proud to support him as he heads to Jacksonville State University this fall to study business and finance.

Tyler’s passion for golf started at the age of 8 through the STPGA Little Linksters program, and it’s only grown stronger since. His years of competition have shaped his values, built his character, and taught him the importance of discipline, time management, and sportsmanship. These traits have carried over into the classroom, where Tyler excels in subjects like economics and mathematics—and into his future, where he hopes to one day make an impact in the world of business and finance.

Since 2021, Tyler has also been part of the Player2Player Coach College Golf Fellowship, a program designed to develop leadership and competitive skills among aspiring college golfers. This experience has further helped him grow both on and off the course.

Tyler’s golf journey continues to reach new heights. Most recently, he was named both the Boys 15–18 Division Champion and Overall Champion at this month’s Srixon Prestige Tour Fore! Challenge at Delaware Springs Golf Club in Burnet, TX, finishing with an impressive 139 (-5). His commitment to the game and his ongoing success on the course reflect the same drive he brings to all aspects of life.

Tyler’s growth as a golfer goes beyond physical skill—he has also worked intentionally to strengthen his mental game. Known for his resilience, focus, and emotional control under pressure, Tyler has faced the highs and lows of competitive golf with grit and determination. Those who’ve worked with him describe him as one of the most dedicated and hardworking athletes they’ve seen, with a rare commitment to excellence and a mindset that matches his talent. His drive to improve in every area of the game is just one more reason he stands out as a deserving scholarship recipient.

“Receiving this scholarship motivates me to work even harder and push for my dreams. Financially, it is a huge help to my family as they have sacrificed everything for me to be able to play golf and compete at the game I love,” said Tyler.

With the support of a George Hannon Scholarship supported by the Buckman and Pigg families, Tyler will begin his college golf career at Jacksonville State this fall—taking one step closer to his dream of becoming a PGA Tour player. We’re excited to watch Tyler continue to grow and achieve great things, and we know he’ll represent the STPGA community well in everything he pursues.

Cimarron Hills Pro-Am Raises $70,000 for PGA REACH Southern Texas

J.L. Lewis' Legacy Powers Another Year of Giving Back

GEORGETOWN, TX – On May 9, the Cimarron Hills Golf & Country Club proudly hosted the Annual Cimarron Hills Pro-Am benefitting the J.L. Lewis Scholarship and PGA REACH Southern Texas. This year's event welcomed 160 players and raised an outstanding $70,000 to support junior golf, college scholarships, and veterans through the STPGA Foundation.

Now in its 14th year, the tournament began as a vision from PGA Director of Golf Chris de Keratry to host a standout event that gives back to PGA REACH Southern Texas. Four years ago, the event took on even deeper meaning when Dawn Lewis partnered with Chris to honor her late husband, PGA Professional J.L. Lewis, and help provide scholarship opportunities for junior golfers.

“The event really took off when we joined forces with Dawn and tied J.L.’s name to it,” said de Keratry. “J.L. Lewis’ impact on the game in Austin and across Southern Texas continues to grow through these scholarships.”

The Pro-Am weekend kicked off Thursday evening with a lively welcome party featuring Texas country artist Kevin Fowler, where players, supporters, and their families gathered to celebrate, connect, and share in the mission of the event. On Friday, 160 players teed it up alongside STPGA Professionals, Touring Professionals, and friends of J.L. Lewis for a fun and meaningful day on the course.

“Chris, Dawn, and the entire Cimarron Hills team do a phenomenal job creating an experience that’s both meaningful and fun,” said Thomas Hutton, Executive Director of the Southern Texas PGA. “This event is a shining example of how community and golf come together to make a real difference.”

The impact of this year’s event is already being felt. Seven scholarships were awarded in 2025 through the J.L. Lewis Scholarship, bringing the total awarded since its inception to $102,000. In addition, funds raised will continue to support the STPGA Foundation’s other three core pillars: Junior Golf, PGA HOPE, and Employment Opportunities.

The tournament proceeds will help launch the second annual PGA HOPE Cup, bringing together veterans who have completed the PGA HOPE program.
Over 100 junior golfers will benefit through subsidized entry into STPGA Junior Golf tournaments.
Continued support will ensure a high-quality internship program, vital for the future of golf leadership and operations.

“We can’t do any of this without the support of our partners, players, and donors,” said Hutton. “We’re deeply thankful for everyone who helped make this event another incredible success.”

PGA REACH Southern Texas has announced the recipients of its 2025–2026 scholarships, awarding a total of $394,500 across 87 scholarships to 78 deserving students. This initiative continues our organization’s long-standing commitment to supporting the academic goals of students, with over $2.68 million awarded since the program began in 1999.

PGA HOPE

PGA HOPE is the flagship military program of PGA REACH, the charitable foundation of the PGA of America. PGA HOPE introduces golf to all Veterans in order to enhance their mental, social, physical and emotional well-being.

Sessions are taught by local PGA Prof essionals with assistance from trained volunteers and include clubs and equipment if needed, training aids, range balls and weekly golf course access.

STPGA'S INAUGURAL APPEARANCE AT PGA HOPE SECRETARY'S CUP

The STPGA was proud to have had our first-ever team appearance at the PGA HOPE Secretary’s Cup in Charlotte, North Carolina.

This year’s Southern Texas team was led by PGA of America Member and U.S. Air Force Veteran Jamie Smith , who currently serves as a PGA HOPE instructor. Smith brings his golf expertise and unique ability to relate to fellow Veterans thanks to his retired military status.

Jack Mitrovich

Hi, my name is Jack Mitrovich and I am from League City, Texas. I am currently a student at Eastern Kentucky University as a Marketing Major as well as a part of the PGA Professional Golf Management Program, I played college golf at the University of St. Thomas in Houston, Texas before returning to EKU. I love to travel as well as play and watch sports, Roll Kerns!

I love to watch the game of golf flourish and I’m blessed that this internship with the STPGA will allow me to help the game grow even more!

James Gilmore

Hello, my name is James Gilmore and I am back with the Southern Texas PGA for the summer after an awesome spring season. I am from Richmond, Virginia. I graduated from Virginia Tech in December 2023 with a degree in Sports Media & Analytics and minors in Event Management and Leadership. I am a huge sports fan and cheer on my alma mater with passion. Go Hokies! Last season, I learned a lot about the rules of golf and how to run great tournaments for our golfers in the spring. I look forward to continue learning and build on the relationships I have made thus far. After my time with the STPGA is up, I plan to attend Ohio University for my masters degree in business and sports administration. Go Bobcats! Before that, I look forward to a great summer. Tyler Honea

Howdy! My name is Tyler Honea, and I’m excited to be joining the STPGA as a summer 2025 intern! I just wrapped up my junior year at Texas A&M University, where I’m studying Sport Management. I’m from Tomball, Texas, and have been playing soccer and golf for most of my life. I’m passionate about growing the game of golf by promoting and educating up-and-coming players. I’m also a dedicated supporter of H-town sports and enjoy spending my free time hanging out with friends. This internship is a great opportunity for me to learn more about the golf industry and gain hands-on experience in business operations to help shape my career in sports. Gig'em Ags!

Zackhery Hernandez

Hi, my name is Zackhery Hernandez. I am excited to be a part of the summer internship at the STPGA. I am originally from Johnson City, TX where I graduated high school in 2018. After I graduated, I joined the United States Air Force and served for six years. I am currently a student in the PGM program at Sam Houston State University. I have always been passionate about golf since I was a little kid, this passion has led me to want to pursue a career in the industry. I'm looking forward to learning more about tournament operations at STPGA over the summer.

Kara Giallanza

Hey y’all! My name is Kara Giallanza and I am from Cypress, Tx. I graduated from the University of Arkansas in May of 2025, with a Bachelor of Science in Recreation and Sports Management and a minor in Human Development and Family Sciences. Woo Pig Sooie!

In my free time I enjoy traveling, attending sporting events, going to concerts and being outdoors! I look forward to joining the STPGA team this summer as a Tournament Operations Intern! I am excited to expand my knowledge of the sports industry throughout this internship!

Hi, I’m Antonia Espinosa! I’m originally from Houston and recently graduated from the University of Arkansas with a degree in Advertising and Public Relations. I’ve always had a passion for sports and storytelling, so I’m excited to be part of the STPGA team! Outside of work, I love going on runs, reading, and spending time with my friends and family!

Ava Somera

Hi everyone! My name is Ava Somera and I am a born and bred Houstonian studying Media Production with an emphasis on the sports industry at the University of Houston. I am currently a Media Intern for the UH Athletics department as the lead Creative for the Women's Golf Team (previously the lead of Swim & Dive), and I am also the VP of Communications for the UH Delta Gamma chapter. In my free time, I love to hike, go on road trips and listen to house music! Thanks to the STPGA team, I have a new opportunity to grow in the golf world alongside great junior players, pros and employees. I am most excited to work in a new environment where I can work on different creative skills that I might not have had time to experiment with during the school year.

Emily Jensen

Hi there! My name is Emily Jensen, and I’m a student at the University of Nebraska at Kearney. I’m majoring in Multimedia and minoring in Media Production. I am scheduled to graduate this December. I was born and raised in Kearney, Nebraska and I’m thrilled to be a part of STPGA.

I’m love golf! I played in high school and for two years in college. I currently work at Kearney Country Club and coach PGA Junior League there. I’ve gained valuable insights into the behind-the-scenes of the golf side of the country club.

When I’m not on the golf course, you can find me hunting and fishing with my dad, spending time with my family, or cheering on the Nebraska Cornhuskers. PGA REACH Southern Texas Awards $394,500 in College Scholarships!

The STPGA and its partners surpass last year’s record and continue to empower junior golfers to reach new heights in both their golfing and academic pursuits!

SPRING, TEXAS – PGA REACH Southern Texas, in partnership with our Scholarship Trustees, is excited to announce this year’s scholarship winners. For the upcoming academic year of 2025-2026, PGA REACH Southern Texas will be awarding $394,500 across 87 different scholarships to 78 deserving winners.

“This is always a highlight to our year,” said Dr. Rich Ballinger, President of the Southern Texas PGA. “I cannot thank all our donors and trustees enough for supporting this pillar of our Foundation. We are truly impacting lives in a positive manner.”

A cornerstone of this year’s program is the incredible support from the Hannon Cup Association, which contributed $105,000 across 21 different scholarships. These scholarships were made possible thanks to the generous support of several dedicated trustees under the Hannon Cup Association. These include contributions from The Legends Clubs, Texas Mutual, Jon Morgan, Buckman/Pigg, the Tim Wilson Memorial Fund, and the Hansen and Grissom families. Their commitment underlines the deep connection between golf and education, and the continued leadership of PGA of America Member Steve Termeer and Brent Buckman.

Since 1999, the program has awarded over 668 scholarships, with a cumulative value of more than $2,683,500—providing vital academic support to high-achieving student-athletes across the region.

“We could not be prouder of these 78 deserving winners,” said Thomas Hutton, Executive Director for the Southern Texas PGA. “We are more than just golf and this program allows us to help young adults achieve their academic goals.”

Another highlight is the return of the Insperity Invitational Scholarship, contributing $20,000 once again this year. The 2025 recipients of Gabriel Garson-Gorroway and Etta Huffman were honored last week at the Player’s Dinner on May 1st with the Greats of Golf.

The Charlie Epps Scholarship program continues to make a significant impact as well, awarding 14 scholarships totaling $70,000. Charlie Epps is a Texas Golf Hall of Fame Member and Past President of the Southern Texas PGA and his annual event in September helps raise dollars for this program.

This year, Energy Transfer supported 16 scholarships totaling $40,000, continuing their mission to empower future leaders through education. Additionally, the Gary Patterson Foundation awarded four $10,000 scholarships for the first time, providing substantial support to students committed to both academic and athletic excellence.

We also want to continue to celebrate the legacy of PGA Professional J.L. Lewis, with seven scholarships awarded this year totaling $35,000, made possible through proceeds from the Cimarron Hills Pro-Am that takes place each Spring!

New to this year’s program was the Divots Foundation Scholarship. Created by Texas junior golfers for Texas junior golfers, the Divots Foundation uses its annual Texas Cup event to raise funds while promoting leadership, teamwork, and charitable giving.

“I would like to personally thank all of our donors and trustees for their support and donations. Without them, we would not be able to continue to see this program grow year over year,” said Hutton.

Each scholarship listed below represents more than financial aid—it’s an investment in the future of these students and their communities. Awards ranged from $1,000 to $10,000, and each one tells a story of perseverance, leadership, and passion.

SPRING CHAMP RECAP

COLLEGE STATION, TX (APRIL 26-27, 2025) - Fifteen Champions were named at the 2025 Spring Championship at The Golf Club at Texas A&M. Champions were crowned from Little Linksters and Junior Tour, and for the first time ever, the Junior Links division competed in this season ending championship! In addition to crowning our spring season champions, an incredible opportunity to qualify for the 14th Annual Texas Junior Cup Matches was on the line this weekend. Players in the 15-18 divisions of Junior Tour also had the exciting opportunity to qualify for the Insperity Invitational Tour Championship!

DRIVE, CHIP, & PUTT MEDIA DAY

On March 17th, the Southern Texas PGA hosted our second annual Drive, Chip & Putt Media Day at Bluejack National in Montgomery, TX to celebrate five junior golfers and their accomplishment of reaching the 11th Annual Drive, Chip & Putt. This unique media day allowed for the five finalists to participate in a press conference, as well as one on one interviews with local news channels. They received some goodie bags, participated in challenges and played a round of golf together afterward.

Ava Frazier, Alana Villarreal, Blake Ayuso, Andrew Bird, and Dawson Dial will represent the STPGA at the DCP National Finals played at Augusta National Golf Club on Sunday, April 6th. We are so proud of each one of these junior golfers and wish them the best of luck in Augusta!

2024 PATRIOT AWARD

Doug Carlton, PGA's journey in the golf industry began in 1990 when he was hired by the U.S. Air Force as the Director of Golf at Muroc Lake Golf Course at Edwards Air Force Base. Over the next three decades, he served at numerous military installations, including Moffett Field, Kirtland AFB, Little Rock AFB, and Fort Sam Houston. His dedication and leadership earned him prestigious recognition, including two Civilian of the Year awards from the U.S. Air Force.

Since joining the Southern Texas PGA Junior Golf program in 2015, both golfers have consistently demonstrated outstanding skill and dedication, earning well-deserved recognition through their impressive string of STPGA victories. Their passion for the game, coupled with their commitment to its core values, has made them stand out as exceptional young athletes. What an incredible start to the year! Just 29 days in, our Junior Golf membership has already surpassed 2,110 members—a milestone worth celebrating!

In addition to our rapidly growing membership, we’ve hosted over 30 tournaments so far. It’s been amazing to see both new and familiar faces out on the course, making memories and showcasing their love for the game.

James Gilmore

Hello, my name is James Gilmore. I am from Richmond, Virginia. I graduated from Virginia Tech in December 2023 with a degree in Sports Media & Analytics and minors in Event Management and Leadership. I am a huge sports fan and cheer on my alma mater with passion. Go Hokies! My favorite thing about sports is the way they bring people together. Golf does this better than any other sport by welcoming people from all walks of life. I intend to make a career working in the game and can’t wait to learn all I can this spring. I look forward to meeting golfers of all ages and experience and helping them develop a passion for the game.

Andrew Pace

Hello, my name is Andrew Pace, and I’m excited to be a part of the spring internship with the STPGA. I’m originally from Bel Air, Maryland, a small town just north of Baltimore. I graduated from High Point University, where I studied Business Administration, Sports Management, and Marketing. Growing up, I played a variety of sports, including soccer, baseball, basketball, and golf. These experiences sparked my passion for the sports world and inspired me to pursue a career in the industry. I’m a proud fan of the Ravens and Orioles, as well as the Knicks, Penguins, Manchester City, and several college teams.

I’m eager to immerse myself in this industry, gain a deeper understanding of golf and the broader sports landscape, and build meaningful relationships with STPGA and other organizations I encounter along the way. I look forward to the opportunities and growth this internship will bring!

Eugenio Lemus

Hello, my name is Eugenio, and I am from Miami, Florida. I have had the privilege of living in three different countries and completed my undergraduate studies in Quebec, Canada. Currently, I am pursuing an MBA at Lynn University. As a passionate sports enthusiast, I follow a wide range of sports, including football and Formula 1. From a young age, I have been eager to pursue a career in the sports industry, and I am thrilled to be part of this esteemed organization. I look forward to expanding my knowledge and deepening my passion for the game of golf.

Julianna Caba

Howdy! My name is Julianna “Jewls” Caba and I am from Corpus Christi, Texas. I am a senior sport management student at Texas A&M university set to graduate in May. I love everything sports related, including the Dallas Cowboys and Houston Astros. In my free time, I like to read, spend time with my family and friends, and enjoy nature. I look forward to growing my knowledge of the golf game and tournament operations at STPGA this spring!

Digital Media Interns

Jori Aventurado

Hi, I'm Jori and I recently graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration, double-majoring in marketing and management at Iona University! During my summer 2023 internship with the Houston Astros my enthusiasm for sports marketing truly blossomed, and sparked my desire to make a meaningful impact in the world of golf with this internship!

I'm a proud Houstonian who grew up surrounded by sports from watching my brothers play baseball to playing water polo player at the collegiate level in New York. While golf is a new passion for me, I'm eager to dive in, learn, and grow within the sport, all while ensuring the STPGA continues to provide invaluable opportunities for golfers!

Outside of work, I loves running, reading, cheering for the Astros, and exploring new cities. I'm excited to contribute to the growth of the STPGA golf programs and support the members along the way!

Delaney Oberg

My name is Delaney Oberg, I am from McAlister, NM. I graduated in 2023 with my Bachelor’s in Coaching and Communications from Eastern New Mexico University. I am still attending and am in my last semester of grad school where I will get my Masters in Sports Administration this May. In my time at ENMU I quickly began my career building by working in athletics as the operations manager for the Men’s basketball team from 2020-2024 and also as a sports information assistant from 2021-2024. In my free time I tend to cater to my own sports photography business I created in 2021 when I learned just how much I love capturing moments in sports with ENMU. I am blessed for the opportunity to cater to the growth of my knowledge in the digital media and I am excited to be with the STPGA this spring!

SCOTT ARCHER, PGA RUNNING FOR PGA REACH SOUTHERN TEXAS

We are extremely proud that our very own Scott Archer, PGA Assistant Executive Director, will be running in the TCS New York City Marathon on Sunday, November 3 to help the PGA of America raise funds for PGA of America REACH Foundation. Since 2017, 47 PGA of America Members have raised over $365,000 covering 1,965 miles in New York City and Scott will be the first representative from Southern Texas to put rubber to the road in this fundraising initiative.

TEXAS GOLF HALL OF FAME INDUCTION

The Class of 2024 was inducted on October 21, 2024 at the Gathering of Eagles Ceremony at Houston Country Club.

Past STPGA Executive Director Mike Ray, PGA, who started the STPGA Foundation in 1994 was inducted as well as Scholarship Trustee Brent Buckman, PGA who has been instrumental with the George Hannon Society. It is an honor to have these two be a part of the Southern Texas PGA and are now etched in Texas golf history.

He worked in the oil industry his entire career where he had a passion for what he did. However, those who know him best know his real passion was golf! Breaking into Golf: How Casey Lawrence Turned an Internship into a Career

Casey Lawrence’s journey into the world of golf began unexpectedly. With no prior experience in the sport, Casey joined the Southern Texas PGA as a Tournament Operations Intern in the Spring of 2024.

Casey discovered the internship through a former coworker who had previously interned with the Section. At the time, he was looking for a challenge and had never considered a career in golf. “I had no background in golf, but I wanted something new. This internship seemed like the challenge I needed,” Sam Houston State University Graduate, Casey Lawrence recalls. That leap of faith opened doors to a career he had not anticipated.

His time at the STPGA proved pivotal, blending administrative and on-site operational experience that ignited his passion for the sport. “Before the internship, I only saw myself working in baseball or football,” Casey explains.
But after witnessing the behind-the-scenes work involved in running a golf tournament, he realized that golf was where he wanted to stay.

Today, Casey works as an Assistant Golf Professional at Black Hawk Country Club. In his role, he oversees member service and pro shop staff, ensuring members and guests enjoy top-tier experiences on the course. He also helps manage golf events, both for club members and outside groups, keeping his hands in the event operations he enjoyed so much during his internship.

One of the most valuable lessons Casey took from his time at the STPGA that he now implements in his current role was the importance of adaptability. “You need to be ready to change things up, whether it’s a rain delay or a frost delay,” he says. That skill has proven critical in his current role, where planning for the unexpected is part of the job.

Another key element of his internship was the connections he built. During his time at the STPGA, Casey had the opportunity to meet Head Golf Professionals, General Managers, and Tournament Directors from across the Section. These connections proved instrumental in helping him secure his current position at Black Hawk. “Nick Drew [Tournament Director at the STPGA] introduced me to Trent Peddy at Black Hawk, whom I met at the Mexico Open Qualifier we ran at the club back in February. That connection set up my interview,” he explains.

Casey also fondly remembers working on the STPGA’s Prestige Tour. The long days, road trips, and close-knit camaraderie among the staff left a lasting impact. “Seeing the passion of the young golfers we hosted and the memories I made with families every weekend were the highlight of my internship,” he says. The experience strengthened his commitment to golf and gave him a sense of purpose within the sport.

For current interns or those just starting their careers, Casey’s advice is simple: “Take it all in. Get involved in every aspect of the Section. You never know who you’ll meet or the skills you’ll discover. And most importantly, have fun!” He encourages interns to embrace the experience fully and not shy away from making lasting memories.

Looking back, Casey cherishes the memories made on the road, at team dinners, and during late-night hangouts with fellow interns. "There are too many fun memories to choose just one, but the time spent with the team made it the best internship experience I could’ve asked for."

Veteran, Champion, and Lead Instructor Inspiring Change Through Golf

As a PGA HOPE Lead Instructor, Jamie Smith blends his passion for both service and golf in remarkable ways. His dedication not only fuels his own success but also uplifts the Veterans he serves. Through his work, Jamie is transforming the lives of fellow Veterans, using the game of golf as a powerful tool for connection, healing, and community.

Jamie Smith, PGA Director of Instruction at the Golf Club of Texas, has been actively involved with PGA HOPE since 2024, but his personal connection to the program runs much deeper. At 62, Jamie, a retired U.S. Air Force veteran from San Diego, CA, brings a wealth of diverse experiences to his role as a PGA HOPE Lead Instructor. A decorated athlete, Jamie has excelled in both military service and competitive sports, including being a two-time All Services Military Surfing Champion and a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu World Champion. His journey through these disciplines has not only shaped his character but also equipped him with invaluable skills that he now shares with Veterans through golf instruction.

His love for golf started unexpectedly when an employer invited him to play. After making birdie on the 18th hole during that very first round, he was hooked for life. Since then, golf has taught him lessons in humility and patience—qualities he carries both on and off the course and imparts to others through PGA HOPE. Jamie sees the golf course as a sanctuary for Veterans, a place where they can leave their worries behind and immerse themselves in the game, surrounded by a supportive community that understands their struggles.

Taking on the role of a PGA HOPE Lead Instructor has provided Jamie with a platform to make a deeper impact. "Now that I have taken the lead role, I get to create a new way of helping and make changes that benefit the Veteran," he shares. His vision for the future includes expanding the program to accommodate more Veterans, as he recognizes the growing waitlist. Jamie hopes to see Veterans get out of their homes, reconnect with society, and find camaraderie on the golf course.

In 2024, Jamie’s leadership was further highlighted when his team from the Golf Club of Texas won the inaugural STPGA HOPE Cup. This victory displayed not only the skill and dedication of his team but also Jamie’s ability to inspire and unite Veterans through the game of golf. The triumph served as a powerful reminder of the sense of community and support that PGA HOPE fosters among Veterans, with Jamie at the helm guiding them every step of the way. His team’s success in the HOPE Cup exemplifies the spirit of collaboration and resilience that Jamie instills in all his students, reinforcing the idea that together, they can achieve greatness both on and off the course.

PGA HOPE has been more than just a program for Jamie—it has been a blessing in his life. As a Veteran, it offers him a way to give back to his fellow troops, continuing his service even after retirement. “I have a way to give back to my troops as a retired military person and it means more to me than anyone understands,” Jamie reflects, emphasizing how much it means to stay connected and provide opportunities for other Veterans through golf.

To any Veteran considering signing up for PGA HOPE, Jamie has one message: “Absolutely get registered and don’t give up when placed on a waitlist.” He encourages all Veterans to join the program, knowing firsthand the positive impact it can have. . Jamie believes that the connections forged through golf can be life-changing, providing Veterans with a renewed sense of purpose and community.

Jamie Smith’s leadership within PGA HOPE not only highlights his skills as a golfer but also reflects his deep commitment to service, community, and the success of others. Through his work, he continues to create opportunities for Veterans to find connection, purpose, and joy on the golf course, inspiring them to thrive both personally and collectively. As Jamie forges ahead in his mission, he remains steadfast in his belief that golf is more than just a game—it is a pathway to healing, camaraderie, and a brighter future for all Veterans.

On Tuesday, April 29, 2025, 36 STPGA Junior Golfers will have the opportunity to play 9 holes with a PGA TOUR Champions professional, providing them with an unforgettable experience. 2025 will mark the 19th year that STPGA Junior Golfers will earn an exemption into this great event at The Woodlands Country Club—Tournament Course.

Swinging Into Success: Matt Wiebelhaus’s Journey from Intern to Hospitality Manager

Meet Matt Wiebelhaus, a former STPGA Tournament Operations intern whose experience with the Southern Texas PGA profoundly impacted his career. Matt’s journey through the internship not only shaped his path in the golf industry but also serves as a compelling example of how firsthand experience and meaningful connections can lead to long-term success.

For Matt, the STPGA internship was an excellent opportunity to broaden his skill set in the golf world. With prior experience in the industry, he was eager to take on new responsibilities and dive into various aspects of tournament operations. However, what excited him was the chance to travel—going from course to course, experiencing new places, and meeting a diverse array of people while doing what he loves in golf was an opportunity he could not resist.

As a Tournament Operations intern, Matt's role was anything but ordinary. He quickly became an essential part of organizing and executing STPGA competitions. His days often began before dawn, where he prepared tournament trailers, set up the golf course, selected hole locations, and introduced golfers at their starting tee. Each tournament presented new challenges, pushing Matt to think on his feet and adapt, skills that proved invaluable as he progressed in his career.

Initially coming from Michigan, Matt felt uncertain about how he would fit in, but he soon discovered the importance of building a support network. The genuine relationships he formed with his STPGA colleagues were essential, and even now, he knows he can reach out to them for advice or encouragement.

“The biggest lesson I learned while working with the STPGA is that no matter where you go, there will always be people ready to help,” reflects Matt. “The connections I made there will be around the rest of my career. Being at the STPGA made me realize the importance of maintaining relationships and continually making new connections because you never know who might play a significant role in your journey. All it takes is meeting the right person to help you take that next step.”

A standout feature of Matt's internship was the camaraderie he experienced among his fellow interns and the STPGA staff. They balanced hard work with fun, creating an atmosphere where professionalism thrived alongside enjoyment. This experience inspired Matt to foster a similar environment in his current role, believing that while work needs to be serious at times, maintaining a supportive and enjoyable atmosphere keeps everyone motivated and engaged.

Now, as Men’s Hospitality Manager at Western Golf & Country Club in Redford, Michigan, Matt sees how the internship shaped his leadership abilities. The experience instilled in him the importance of taking initiative, stepping up when needed, and making decisions with confidence—qualities that have been crucial to his career advancement. In his current role, he manages the Men’s Grill, oversees the Locker Room, and directs the junior golf program during the summer, utilizing the leadership and organizational skills he developed during his time with the STPGA.

“I learned to adapt, grow as a leader, and take initiative without being asked,” says Matt. “These skills have opened doors for me and led to multiple managerial roles within the golf industry.”

For those aspiring to join the STPGA team, Matt offers straightforward yet powerful advice: “Dive in completely.” He encourages interns to connect with as many people as possible, seize every opportunity, and go the extra mile. In the golf industry, hard work does not go unnoticed, and the effort you put in directly correlates with the rewards you receive.

PGA REACH Southern Texas and Charlie Epps raise $88,000 to Continue Impacting Lives Through Golf!

Charlie Epps’s Legacy in Southern Texas Golf Continues with a Record-Breaking Fundraising Event!

Spring, TX – On September 23rd, PGA REACH Southern Texas, in collaboration with PGA Life Member Charlie Epps, proudly hosted the 4th Annual Golf Club of Houston Invitational, raising a groundbreaking $88,000 to benefit the Charlie Epps Scholarship and the STPGA Junior Golf Program. This year's event not only doubled the amount raised in 2023 but also set a new benchmark for future fundraising efforts.

This year’s event featured over 115 players with each group featuring a PGA of America Member, Touring Professional, or a close friend of Charlie Epps. The goal since the inception of this event is simple: to raise funds for the Charlie Epps Scholarship, which supports young golfers with academic excellence and financial need, and the STPGA Junior Golf program.

“Every year, we’re able to help more young athletes achieve their dreams, both on and off the course. It’s truly inspiring to witness the long-lasting impact this event has on their futures,” Epps remarked during the closing ceremony. “I am deeply grateful for the overwhelming support and community involvement in expanding this scholarship fund, which proudly bears my name.”

Now in its fourth year, the tournament continues to grow, thanks to the Presenting Partners: Doggett, Insperity, Lexus, and Lindsayca. The event’s success was also made possible through the outstanding efforts of Adam Lockwood, PGA Director of Golf at the Golf Club of Houston, as well as the dedicated staff, and the members of the club, all of whom played an integral role in ensuring the event’s smooth execution.

The Pro-Am tournament saw significant backing from sponsors, including Chicago Title, Danny Levitt, Enerflex, Gordon Johnson, Insperity Invitational, Jimmy Johnson, Steven J. Lindley, Texas Farm Bureau Insurance, The Wylie Family, and Zedcor. Their generosity was crucial to the event's success.

“We are beyond thankful to everyone who supported this year’s event,” stated Thomas Hutton, STPGA Executive Director. “The funds raised will create life-changing opportunities for young golfers, and we’re proud to see this tournament grow each year, both in honor of Charlie Epps and in support of junior golf.”

Veterans Gather for an Unforgettable Day of Golf, Celebrating Resilience and Camaraderie!

SPRING, TX - The Southern Texas PGA (STPGA) proudly hosted the inaugural STPGA HOPE Cup on Saturday, September 14, 2024, at the prestigious Clubs of Kingwood - Lake Course. This groundbreaking event celebrated PGA HOPE (Helping Our Patriots Everywhere) Southern Texas graduates, offering a day of camaraderie, competition, and community for Veterans and their families. The tournament not only honored their military service but highlighted golf's remarkable role as a rehabilitative and therapeutic tool.

The event welcomed 35 Veterans, representing various branches of the U.S. Armed Forces, all of whom participated in a nine-hole golf tournament. These PGA HOPE graduates were paired with PGA HOPE Leads, the PGA of America Members and Associates who have supported them throughout their journey. The event was a testament to the transformative power of golf in fostering healing, resilience, and connection among Veterans.

“We couldn’t have asked for a better outcome,” said Ximena Davila, Foundation Coordinator for the Southern Texas PGA. “This event isn’t just about golf, but about the perseverance, dedication, and camaraderie our Veterans have developed. The sense of belonging and support that PGA HOPE creates is truly something special. We are honored to play a part in their ongoing journey.”

The STPGA HOPE Cup began with an opening ceremony, featuring the Kingwood High School NJROTC Cadets presenting the colors and leading the National Anthem. Following this patriotic tribute, teams were set off in a shotgun start.

The tournament’s unique team-based format paired PGA HOPE graduates with PGA HOPE Leads, creating an atmosphere of shared effort and collaboration. After an intense but friendly competition, it was Team Golf Club of Texas that triumphed, claiming victory and the title of the inaugural STPGA HOPE Cup champions. The team was led by Jamie Smith, PGA Director of Instruction, who praised the powerful sense of camaraderie on and off the course that fueled their success.

“This event has created one of my most cherished PGA HOPE memories,” said David Cano, U.S. Marine Corps Veteran and member of the winning team. “Being part of a team and playing in this event has meant the world to me. PGA HOPE has been my sanctuary, a place where I’ve found peace amidst the chaos of the world and my own mind.”

The success of the inaugural STPGA HOPE Cup was made possible by the generous support of its Presenting Partners: Donut NV, J.L. Lewis, Raymond James, and Zedcor Security Solutions. A special thanks also to Ron Zaborowski, PGA Regional Director of Tournament Sales, and the dedicated staff and members of the Clubs of Kingwood, whose exceptional efforts ensured the event ran smoothly and memorably.

Looking ahead, the Southern Texas PGA is excited to continue this tradition, establishing the STPGA HOPE Cup as an annual celebration of Veterans, their resilience, and the healing power of golf.

11 CHAMPS NAMED AT THE BIGGEST JUNIOR CHAMPIONSHIP OF THE YEAR!

Eleven Champions were named at the 2024 STPGA Junior Championship at The Woodlands Country Club (Palmer Course). Champions were crowned from Junior Tour and Little Linksters. In addition to crowning our Lodge Lumber Summer Points List Champions, an incredible opportunity to qualify for the 13th Annual Texas Junior Cup team was also on the line this weekend for both divisions.

FRIERSON AND LAN ARE CROWNED CHAMPIONS ATFIRST EVER INSPERITY INVITATIONAL TOUR CHAMPIONSHIP!

The inaugural Insperity Invitational Tour Championship hosted by the Srixon Billiard Factory Prestige Tour took place at Barton Creek Country Club (Palmer Lakeside) in Spicewood, Texas. This new event was announced last year to reward the success of the many junior golfers on the Srixon Billiard Factory Prestige Tour throughout the year and bring the best of the best together! The 57-player field consisted of 32 Srixon Billiard Factory Prestige Tour winners and 11 college commits.

TEAM STPGA BRINGS THE BEN HOGAN CUP DOWN SOUTH!

In August team STPGA traveled to Shady Oaks Country Club in Fort Worth, TX, for the 9th annual Ben Hogan Junior Cup Matches. They excelled in the Four-Ball and Foursome Matches on Day 1, building a strong lead of 8 to 4. On Day 2, they capitalized on that advantage in the Singles Matches, ultimately reclaiming the cup with a final score of 14.5 to 9.5! Congrats to all of our players on a job well done and for bringing the cup back to Southern Texas for the first time in four years!

Capturing Moments: Rachel Fisch’s Journey from STPGA Intern to Sports Media Creative

Rachel Fisch’s adventure with the Southern Texas PGA was more than just an internship—it was the start of something special. Coming from New Jersey, Rachel had not intended for her career path to create such deep roots in the heart of Texas, but the lure of a Digital Media Internship with the chance to travel and create content was too perfect to pass up. With a camera in one hand and a passion for storytelling in the other, she embarked on a journey that would change everything.

From the moment she started, Rachel knew she was in the right place. Her days were filled with capturing the energy of tournaments, expressing her creativity through content creation, and planning social media content that drew people in. It was not just about the work; it was about the people, the moments, and the stories she could tell.

"I remember working on videos for the Annual Banquet," Hofstra University graduate, Rachel recalls. "It was more than just filming and editing—it was about capturing something real, something that mattered." Seeing the emotional reactions of the winners and their families when they saw the videos for the first time was something she carries with her to this day.

As she grew in her role, she also grew in her relationships within the STPGA office. The STPGA staff became more than colleagues—they became a second family. They were there every day, supporting her, challenging her, and helping her grow. Rachel thrived on the fast-paced environment and the feeling that she was part of something bigger than herself. And every time she went above and beyond, it was noticed.

“I learned that exceeding expectations is key,” Rachel says. “When you push yourself to do more, people see it, and it makes a difference.”

By the end of her eight months with STPGA, Rachel was not just a digital media intern anymore; she was a storyteller, a creator, someone who had found her path. It was a bittersweet moment when her last day arrived. She had grown so close to the team, and the idea of leaving them behind was tough.

"I cried on my last day," Rachel admits with a smile. "After spending nearly every day with these amazing people, it was hard to say goodbye. But I knew this was just the beginning."

Today, Rachel carries the lessons, friendships, and memories from her time at the STPGA into her new role as Content Coordinator at Harris County – Houston Sports Authority. She plans, creates, and executes content that brings the energy of sports to life, just as she did during her internship. The connections she made, the skills she learned, and the experiences she had continue to guide her every step of the way.

For those following in her footsteps, Rachel offers simple advice: "Enjoy the ride. Be curious, be bold, and do not be afraid to put yourself out there. The people you meet and the work you do can shape your future in ways you never expected."

Scholarship Spotlight: Cole Cantu

“My golf journey will continue and that’s how I know I have already won.”

Freshman at the University of the Incarnate Word Cole Cantu's journey in golf is more than just a series of achievements; it is a deeply personal and meaningful path that has shaped his character and future aspirations. As the STPGA Junior Golfer of the Year in 2022 and San Antonio City Junior Champion, Cole has demonstrated not only talent but also a profound dedication to the sport.

Growing up in a household of educators, with his mom teaching math and his dad coaching tennis, Cole was instilled with the values of learning and self-improvement. His parents' encouragement to focus on progress rather than outcomes has helped Cole understand that true success is found in steady improvement, both in sports and academics.

Cole has been part of the STPGA Junior Golf program since 2017 during which he has participated in over 70 events. Most recently in 2024 Cole closed out his final season with the STPGA Junior Golf program with three Top 10 finishes in Srixon Billiard Factory Prestige Tour Tournaments. His involvement with the STPGA has not only refined his skills but also helped him make lifelong friends and deepen his understanding of the game's rules and values.

“The STPGA has been instrumental in shaping me into the person I am today,” reflects Cole. “Through their support, I've not only gained valuable skills but also formed lasting friendships and discovered my sense of purpose.”

Cole’s passion for golf extends beyond his personal game. Through his work at summer camps at the Dominion Country Club, he has found joy in assisting other golfers, especially younger players, with their development. This experience has sparked his interest in pursuing a future in coaching, where he aims to help others grow in the sport that has given him so much.

As he looks ahead to his collegiate career, he hopes to help the University of the Incarnate Word earn their first conference championship. Cole is a proud recipient of the J.L. Lewis Scholarship, a testament to his dedication and promise in the golfing community. His goal is to pursue a career in the golf industry, centered on coaching and building up other players, ensuring that J.L. Lewis’ passion for the sport continues to inspire others.

“Assisting other golfers with their game is both satisfying and challenging,” expresses Cole. “Seeing the growth and excitement of younger players as they develop their skills is fulfilling and has sparked my interest in learning more about coaching golf later in life.”

For Cole, golf is more than a sport; it is a journey of personal growth and a lifelong passion. He has learned to challenge himself without tying his self-worth to scores or grades, a lesson that has shaped his outlook on life. Winning, to Cole, is about the enjoyment of steady improvement and the journey itself. This mindset is why he knows that his golf journey will go further than his development as a player, and in that, he has already won.

“Enjoy Life…. It Is Not A Dress Rehearsal”

PGA of America Associate Dave Roberts has been playing golf since the age of four. Dave’s passion for golf began by following in his father’s footsteps, a Veteran who taught Dave the beauty of using golf as an escape from daily life. Though aware of just how healing it can be to play golf, Dave fell in love with golf in a new way during his military service in the Army in the mid-eighties. Dave reignited his passion for the game and went on to win several military championships during his service.

“My dad was a Veteran, and he found his peace on the golf course—it was his way to step away from the chaos of everyday life,” reflects Dave. “Watching him, I wanted to be just like him. Golf became more than just a game; it was a connection to my father, a way to find my own escape, and ultimately, my passion.”

The shift from player to teacher began in 1988. Dave took a part-time job at the local on-base golf course while still serving in the military, where he began learning to teach golf under the guidance of Leon "Spanky" Moody. In 1990, Dave separated from the Army as a disabled Veteran and transitioned to managing an on-base golf course, marking the start of his journey as a PGA of America Associate.

For the past 34 years, Dave has focused on transforming underperforming golf courses into thriving facilities while dedicating his career to growing the game of golf. His passion lies in teaching and mentoring players of all levels, with a special emphasis on junior golfers and beginners, helping them develop their skills and love for the sport. This passion and deep ties to the military community eventually led Dave to PGA HOPE. As a disabled Veteran himself, Dave is able to serve his fellow service members in a meaningful way. Having experienced firsthand the solace that golf provided during his military service, Dave is dedicated to offering that same sense of peace and purpose to other Veterans.

“Being a disabled veteran myself, PGA HOPE is dear to my heart because I can now give back to my brothers and sisters that served our country,” expresses Texas native, Dave Roberts. “I understand them because I go through some of the same things they do.”

Being a Lead Instructor for PGA HOPE is both an honor and a blessing for Dave. He takes pride in making a difference in Veterans' lives, finding great fulfillment in his work. Through the game, Dave has learned respect—respect for individuals, the game, and himself. As both a PGA HOPE Lead and Veteran, Dave aims to raise awareness of the program, impact more Veterans, and maintain connections with those who have participated in PGA HOPE. He truly believes in “Helping Our Patriots Everywhere’ and actively encourages the growth of PGA HOPE not only Nationwide, but Worldwide.

Now in what he calls the "fourth quarter" of his life, but not yet at the "two-minute warning," Dave hopes to continue his work in nurturing the golf community—from junior golf to PGA HOPE and beyond. He aspires to be remembered for his commitment to giving back and making a difference in people's lives, living by the principle of "Service Before Self."

“PGA HOPE is a Veteran’s program first and a golf program second,” expresses Dave. “PGA HOPE is an experience not just another golf clinic. Through this experience I have been able to discover parts of myself that I didn’t know existed and find a true purpose.”

Byah Fields

Hello! I’m Byah Fields, originally from Cordele, Georgia. I graduated from the University of Georgia with a degree in Business Administration, where I developed a strong foundation in business principles and honed my communication skills. My passion for golf has always been a significant part of my life, and I’m excited to combine my interests with my career aspirations.

I chose to intern with the Southern Texas PGA because it offers a unique opportunity to immerse myself in the sports industry, particularly in an area that aligns perfectly with my interests. This internship is a perfect fit as it provides hands-on experience in sports communication and event management, which are crucial to my career goals. My aim is to build a career in the sports business, and I’m eager to contribute to and learn from the talented team here at the Southern Texas PGA. Fun fact: When I’m not working or studying, you’ll often find me on the golf course, perfecting my swing or enjoying a round with friends.

Matthew Jones - Tournament Operations

"Out of the seemingly endless number of things I’ve learned over the past 7 months, the most important knowledge I have gained is the understanding of exactly how the professional golf industry is run from a business, operational, and Member perspective. Spending the Spring and Summer traveling around the Southern Texas Section for both Junior and Professional tournaments has allowed me to connect with and learn from Professionals on all sides of the industry.

My favorite part of the internship has been the travel opportunities. Our Section has so many beautiful host facilities that we run our events at and I have been blessed to be able to see and play at some of the most beautiful golf courses in the country. Our professional staff does a wonderful job of accommodating our needs while we are on the road and there are many times where work does not feel like work and I am grateful for that.

One thing I will take with me from this internship is the relationships I have built with my coworkers. I have never held a position that has as cohesive of a workplace culture as the Southern Texas PGA has. I am beyond thankful for the relationships I have built over these last 7 months and I can confidently say that the friendships I have with each and every one of them will not fade away as I leave this internship. "

Valentina Martinez Otto - Digital Media

"This internship allowed me to explore numerous skills in digital media including photography, social media, editing with Adobe platforms, and player/parent interaction. What I took away the most was the fact that this internship confirmed I want to continue my career in this industry because of how much I enjoyed it. Looking back, I think my favorite memory was our first tournament when all the interns got to travel to Austin together!"

Sarah Lummus - Tournament Operations

"Through this internship I have learned not only the logistics and process of running a golf tournament, but how to build relationships with players and their families within those tournaments. My favorite part of this summer would definitely be getting to see myself and my coworkers learn, grow closer with each other, and become more and more confident in our roles. I will be taking away from this internship a deeper understanding of the game of golf as well as numerous positive memories from our time here this summer."

Sammy Garza - Tournament Operations

"The biggest thing I have learned from this internship is the importance of working together as a team and having good communication. My highlight is probably having a cookout for dinner after the Delaware Springs tournament but almost every post tournament dinner was pretty memorable. As sad as I am to see it end, I leave this internship with a strengthened passion for the game of golf and hope to find a career in tournament operations!"

Abby Wolfe - Digital Media

"Through this internship I have been able to increase my knowledge and experience in all things digital media, such as video editing, photography, graphic creation, and more. My favorite part of the internship has been being able to meet people from all over and being able to form relationships that will last a lifetime. The biggest takeaway from the internship is the importance of being willing to learn and take chances, and how it leads to amazing and unexpected experiences!"

Shelbee Gosselin - Tournament Operations

"The most important thing I have learned is how to paint a golf course and what it looks like to run a 36 hole tournament and the people and equipment it takes to run it. My favorite part of the internship so far has been Delaware Springs. It was our first away trip and it was great for team bonding and we had a blast! The biggest takeaway I will be taking from the internship is how fun work can be when around amazing people!"

"Through this internship I have seen the importance of building connections with everyone you meet, especially the PGA of America Members. My favorite part of this summer would be to go to all of the incredible golf courses we have and being able to play some of the best courses in Texas. From this internship I will be taking away a new passion for the game of golf, as I continue on my journey to become a PGA of America Member."

PGA HOPE Spotlight: Sergio Avendaño

“Those that want to accomplish something, find a way; those that don’t, find an excuse.”

Sergio’s golf journey began in high school when his girlfriend’s brother introduced him to the sport. Despite initial struggles, he was captivated by the feeling of hitting a perfect shot. Over the years, he played various sports, but it was retirement and the COVID-19 pandemic that pushed him to focus on golf as his primary means of staying active and competitive.

“It wasn’t until I retired that my body wouldn’t allow me to continue playing all those other sports,” recalls Sergio, retired US Air Force electrician. “COVID really thrust me into golf as my only option to stay active and compete in something, even if I was only competing against myself.”

Sergio's journey into golf began with his retirement, but it is also what led to his eventual involvement with PGA HOPE. Initially, he sought out PGA HOPE to improve his game, as he was playing more frequently but not very well. Through the HOPE sessions, Sergio honed his skills and gained a deeper understanding of the sport. His volunteer efforts further enhanced his experience, transforming golf from a hobby into a profound source of peace and joy. PGA HOPE evolved from a personal quest for improvement into a cornerstone of happiness in his life.

Sergio’s passion for PGA HOPE along with his drive to volunteer and become more involved led to his selection as an Ambassador for PGA HOPE Southern Texas. Being a PGA HOPE Ambassador has provided Sergio with a renewed sense of service and purpose. The community of Veterans within the program has brought him unexpected joy. He finds great fulfillment in hearing from Veterans who credit HOPE with encouraging them to become active and reengage with life.

“Not long ago a Veteran in the program pulled me aside and thanked me for HOPE,” reminisces Sergio. “He said that he had not left his home in many months and that he was in a dark space. Golf and PGA HOPE gave him a purpose and something to look forward to. He is taking small steps and trying to heal. The programs that we are sharing with our Veterans truly matter and that is impactful.”

Sergio hopes to continue serving his community, especially Veterans, by demonstrating that golf is inclusive and accessible to all, regardless of physical limitations. For those out there looking to get involved with PGA HOPE, Sergio says the following, “Jump all the way in. The only cost to the Veteran is a little of your time. The lessons are 100% free and are for complete beginners to experienced players looking to build camaraderie. PGA HOPE can really change and save lives if you let it!

Scholarship Spotlight: Meredith Speer

Teeing Up Success: Meredith Speer's Journey in PGA Golf Management

Meredith Speer first began participating in the STPGA Junior Golf Program in 2016. During her time in the program she had 9 first-place finishes, as well as over 60 top-five finishes at tournaments all across Southern Texas.

“Growing up I was always playing in the STPGA junior golf tournaments and playing in those tournaments truly fostered the love I now have for the game of golf,” reflects Meredith Speer, a native of Cedar Park, Texas.

Through the STPGA, Meredith not only competed in tournaments, but also formed valuable connections and took lessons from PGA of America Members, including J.L. Lewis and Jennifer MacCurrach. Their guidance taught her the importance of making others feel seen and valued, and how a strong sense of self can lead to success. Inspired by their leadership, Meredith developed a passion for becoming a PGA Member herself.

“We all go through direct life-changing experiences,” Meredith recalls, “but there are also the kinds of experiences that happen around you. These experiences, if you're lucky enough to witness them, also shape the kind of person you choose to become. Through observation, I have had extraordinary experiences by witnessing some amazing people and learning from their actions.”

Meredith's journey into her future career has also afforded her valuable internship experiences at Cimarron Hills Country Club, Great Hills Country Club, and the University of Texas Golf Club. These opportunities have allowed her to acquire essential skills for her career and further expand her network of relationships with PGA Members.

For Meredith, being able to have learned from incredible LPGA and PGA Members has impacted her life in a bigger way than she would have imagined. Now being a PGA Golf Management student, she is on her way to following in the footsteps of those golf professionals who have deeply impacted her life.

Under the guidance of Dr. Rich Ballinger, PGA master professional, STPGA Vice President, and one of only 373 Master Professionals, Meredith has a unique opportunity to learn from the best, and make her mark in the golf industry.

“When I graduate, I plan to make an impact in my community by being a role model for young children. Through the game of golf, I hope to teach them the life skills I've learned and inspire them to reach their full potential.”

Lexus and Southern Texas PGA Announce New Partnership

Lexus becomes a STPGA Junior Golf Patron Partner as well as supports STPGA Members.

Spring, TX (July 16, 2024) – The Southern Texas PGA is proud to announce a new partnership with Lexus, one of the most recognizable brands in the automotive industry for its first-class customer service and high-quality performing vehicles. This exciting announcement features branding, event activations and community involvement throughout the next 18 months.

Lexus will become a Patron Partner of the STPGA Junior Golf program and receive unprecedented exposure throughout the largest junior golf program in the country and be heavily involved at the annual STPGA Junior Championship in August, where 300 families from around the section come to the summer ending Championship.

“Lexus is always looking for new ways to connect with young families and showcase our wide variety of vehicle options for families driving around Southern Texas,” said Michael Kavanaugh, General Manager of the Lexus Southern Area. “The Southern Texas PGA does an excellent job providing great brand exposure but also doing it around a sport that teaches the next generation so many life lessons and skills that we, too, value at Lexus.”

Lexus will join Veritex Bank, PGA TOUR Superstore, and First Community as the STPGA’s four Patron Partners that all believe in creating lifelong golfers who enjoy the game and want to keep playing the rest of their life.

In addition, Lexus will be showcased at the STPGA Section Championship as a presenting partner where STPGA Members will compete to win the Tommy Aycock Trophy and take their first step in qualifying for the following year’s PGA Championship. This year’s event is September 9-10 at the historic Champions Golf Club in Houston, TX.

Lastly, Lexus is also getting involved with the STPGA’s scholarship program when it supports Past President and Texas Golf Hall of Fame Member Charlie Epps at the annual Golf Club of Houston Pro-Am on September 23. Lexus will be a presenting partner of the event and have a Hole-In-One Contest where the winner could win a Lexus. This event to date has raised $100,000 in college scholarships and showcases Lexus’ commitment to giving back and getting involved with the community it which it serves.

Since the start of this event, $100,000 has been raised in college scholarships for 11 different STPGA Junior Golfers and we look to growing this number even more in 2024. Samuel Ullrich: From the Greens to the Broadcast Booth

Samuel Ullrich was first introduced to the STPGA Junior Golf Program in 2020. In his year playing, Samuel received an invitation to participate in the prestigious Junior Links Championship, where he achieved an impressive 4th place finish. This early success only deepened his love for golf and set the stage for his future endeavors.

"The STPGA means a lot to me because it was my foundation for golf," recalls Samuel, a native of Conroe, Texas. "I started off in the 9-hole tournaments and had to take the max stroke limit almost every hole, but that was the foundation of who I became through my experience in high school golf."

At Conroe High School, Samuel's dedication to golf shone brightly. As a member of the Varsity Golf Team for four years, he had the honor of serving as the team captain during his junior and senior years. This leadership role taught him the value of teamwork, discipline, and perseverance—qualities that are essential for success both academically and professionally.

Samuel's journey has not been without its challenges. During his sophomore year, he tore a muscle under his shoulder blade, a significant setback for any athlete. However, his involvement in STPGA events played a crucial role in his recovery and return to the sport. Reflecting on this experience, Samuel said, "My sophomore year I tore a muscle under my shoulder blade, and playing in STPGA events was a major resource for my recovery and getting back into golf after my injury."

Beyond the greens, Samuel discovered a passion for sports broadcasting. As a Sports Commentator for Conroe ISD, he found his true calling. This experience ignited a desire to pursue a career in broadcast journalism, where he could leverage his storytelling and communication skills to inform and inspire others.

Samuel's hard work and dedication have paid off academically as well. He has been accepted to the Texas Tech University Honors College, where he plans to further develop his skills and knowledge in broadcast journalism. With a clear vision for the future, Samuel is eager to achieve his ultimate goal of becoming a sports commentator on a major TV network.

As Samuel prepares to embark on his college journey, he expresses immense gratitude for PGA REACH Southern Texas and the John & Ginny Termeer scholarship support that will help him pursue his dreams. "This will allow me to go straight into broadcasting at Texas Tech University, and it’s just an honor to receive this opportunity through this scholarship," Samuel shared.

Samuel’s determination and vision for the future are clear: "Hopefully one day I’ll be on a big-time TV network as a sports commentator, and this scholarship will have been a key step in me getting there and reaching my dream."

PGA REACH Southern Texas is excited to announce the 4 th Annual Golf Club of Houston Invitational Benefitting the Charlie Epps Scholarship and STPGA Junior Golf on Monday, September 23, 2024.

“Charlie Epps loves the game of golf, loves Houston, and loves getting the next generation involved in golf,” said Thomas Hutton, Executive Director for the STPGA. “We are so appreciative of his drive and determination to continue to find ways to give back, build relationships with businesses in Houston, and promote our PGA of America Members.”

The event will feature 1 PGA of America Member with each group of 4 Amateurs on the Member Course at Golf Club of Houston. Included in the entry for each team are two meals, tee prizes, special contests, and unlimited drinks.

Inaugural Southern Texas PGA HOPE Cup Set to Tee Off!

SPRING, TX (June 22, 2024) – The Southern Texas PGA is thrilled to announce the inaugural STPGA HOPE Cup, scheduled to take place on August 24, 2024, at the prestigious Clubs of Kingwood - Lake Course in Kingwood, Texas. This landmark event will unite Veterans, golf enthusiasts, and community supporters to celebrate and support PGA HOPE (Helping Our Patriots Everywhere), the flagship military program of the PGA of America. PGA HOPE Southern Texas introduces golf to Veterans to enhance their physical, mental, social, and emotional well-being while fostering camaraderie and wellness. This free program taught by trained PGA of America Members and Associates saves lives each year.

The STPGA HOPE Cup will feature a 9-hole tournament, fostering camaraderie and celebration. The event will begin with a shotgun start at 1:30 PM, followed by a dinner and awards ceremony. Participants will enjoy the unique experience of playing on the Lake Course, renowned for its natural beauty and water features.

“We are honored to host the first-ever Southern Texas PGA HOPE Cup Tournament,” said Thomas Hutton, Executive Director of the Southern Texas PGA. “This event is not just about golf; it’s about giving back to our Veterans who have sacrificed so much for our country. Through PGA HOPE Southern Texas, we are dedicated to improving Veterans’ lives by leveraging the therapeutic benefits of golf.”

The tournament will feature teams of five, consisting of PGA HOPE Southern Texas Instructors and four of their PGA HOPE graduates. The format will be a scramble, ensuring a fun and competitive atmosphere for players of all skill levels.

In a significant show of support, The Cimarron Hills Pro-Am benefitting the J.L. Lewis Scholarship has committed to being a Presenting Partner for the event, continuing to honor J.L. Lewis’ legacy. New to the STPGA is Zedcor Security Solutions, our second Presenting Partner for the event. These contributions will play a crucial role in the success of the tournament and the ongoing support of PGA HOPE programs in Southern Texas.

Proceeds from the event will directly benefit the PGA HOPE Southern Texas programs, which provide free golf instruction, equipment, and playing opportunities for Veterans. These programs are designed to be inclusive and adaptive, making golf accessible to Veterans with various physical and cognitive disabilities.

“We are excited for a day of golf, gratitude, and giving back,” expressed Scott Archer, Assistant Executive Director of the Southern Texas PGA. “This event will be a celebration of all the hard work these PGA HOPE graduates have put into their golf game, as well as an opportunity to establish a community of support across Southern Texas.”

PGA HOPE Spotlight: Rhonda Hayes

From the Air Force to the Fairway: Rhonda Hayes' Journey with PGA HOPE

For PGA HOPE Southern Texas Graduate, Rhonda Hayes, golf has fostered a community she has only previously experienced as an active-duty service member.

Rhonda was no stranger to the game before PGA HOPE. Originally from South Florida, Rhonda grew up surrounded by golf, and while she never took an interest in playing, she did have several summer jobs at golf courses. Her interest in playing later developed during her career with the Air Force.

Rhonda is a retired Air Force Master Sergeant with over 23 years of service. In the first half of Rhonda's career, she served as an active-duty Air Traffic Controller. She later transitioned to an Aerospace Weapons and Controlman for the Southeast Air Defense Sector/601st Air Operations Center at Tyndall AFB, FL., a NORAD affiliate. There, her mission was to provide air sovereignty to the Southeastern United States following the events of September 11, 2001.

“I took one of the first calls on that fateful day and for the next 8 days, coordinated with FAA, military aircraft, and government/law enforcement organizations in an attempt to bring some type of improvisation in a very unknown, unpredictable environment over the U.S.,” shares Rhonda.

During her service, Rhonda had the opportunity to play for the All Air Force Women's Softball team for several years. There she developed excellent hand-eye coordination that she later applied to her golf game. Her time and connections on the AirForce Softball team are what led to her eventually discovering PGA HOPE. Once retired, a former teammate contacted her about a golf program for Veterans in San Antonio.

“She explained that it was six sessions and personal lessons from local golf pros once a week for FREE!,” Rhonda recalls. “She and I both signed up for a co-ed session on Wednesdays and Women’s individual sessions on Saturdays and we both have improved our golf games remarkably!”

From being a self-proclaimed ‘lucky player, not good player’, Rhonda has now learned how to properly hold and align each club, completely transforming her game. Coming from a background in softball, Rhonda quickly realized that her experience helped her but that golf was nothing like softball.

“The most difficult thing for me to learn was allowing the clubs to do what they are designed to do and try not to ‘force’ anything with physical exertion to propel the ball,” expresses Rhonda.

While PGA HOPE has significantly improved Rhonda's golf skills, it has more importantly shown her to not be so hard on herself, emphasizing that in golf, the only competition is oneself. For Rhonda, her inspiration comes from people who, although having been dealt some horrible cards in life, pull themselves up by the bootstraps and work to make the world a better place for everyone to live. As a Veteran with a service-connected PTSD diagnosis, PGA HOPE has provided Rhonda with a way to build relationships and spend time with individuals who share similar experiences.

DICK HARMON PARTICIPATION GRANT

The goal of the Southern Texas PGA and PGA REACH Southern Texas is to introduce our area's youngsters to the challenges and rewards of golf. Started by the Harmon Family in honor of Dick Harmon, PGA REACH Southern Texas has created the Dick Harmon Participation Grant program to help provide top-flight golf opportunities to young men and women regardless of financial resources.

ANOTHER RECORD BREAKING YEAR!

The PGA REACH Southern Texas Scholarship Program is excited to announce the awarding of 63 scholarships to 60 individuals to the cumulative amount of $297,500! This amount is a massive increase of $87,000 compared to last year’s program and we are so appreciative of all our partner’s support! These funds will help these 60 young adults continue their academic careers during the 2024-2025 school year!

PGA WORKS Activation at 2024 PGA Championship

“Valhalla, where warriors go to rest”

Through the PGA of America REACH Foundation, Alex Mudie’s position as a WORKS Fellow has led her to many great opportunities, the most recent being 2024 Championship Fellow Activation trip hosted in Louisville Kentucky. This trip allowed her to experience tournament operations at the 2024 PGA Championship, and more importantly, the incredible work that PGA HOPE is doing for our nation’s heroes. The Secretary’s Cup is considered the “major” of the PGA HOPE military program, and it was an immense honor for Alex to be a part of creating a memorable experience for the participating Veterans and Active Duty Service Members.

The trip consisted of varying activities, both on and off the golf course. On Saturday, May 11th, all twelve PGA HOPE teams arrived for the Secretary’s Cup. The first stop was the famous Churchill Downs, home of the Kentucky Derby. Partnering with Direct TV, a fantastic day was planned for everyone involved, including a welcome dinner, a Churchill Downs ground tour, and a special appearance of the Wanamaker Trophy from the PGA Championship for a great photo opportunity.

“I had not expected the welcome reception to be as grand as it was. I truly felt like I was part of something great,” said Mudie looking back at the experience. “It was also fun to see people dressed up in derby outfits!”

The second day of the activation was spent at the host site for the Secretary’s Cup, The University of Louisville Golf Club, a 19-minute drive from the 106th PGA Championship location Valhalla Golf Club. The day enabled the Veterans and PGA of America Members to prepare with their teams, get to know the other teams attending from different states, and allow the WORKS Fellows to spend time with the participants.

A portion of these celebrations included having all participating Veterans to dedicate their experience and round to a fallen service member. A board was then placed on the tee box of the 9th hole for all to see when passing by. It was an emotional experience for many Veterans to see the dedicated names.

“This part of the day put everything into perspective for me,” expressed Mudie. “It demonstrates that we will never fully understand what each Veteran has been through during their service, but seeing the impact that the PGA HOPE has on their lives and the importance that PGA REACH has on so many lives, makes me honored to get to be a part of their journey and give back to them.”

The official day of the Secretary’s Cup was on day three. The WORKS Fellows arrived at The University of Louisville Golf Club early in the morning where all 48 Veterans prepared for a skills challenge competition and interviews before teeing off. The 11 WORKS Fellows were each assigned as a standard bearer for a team for the 9-hole scramble competition. Alex Mudie was assigned to team Nebraska.

“It was a fantastic day on the golf course, and team Nebraska ended up four under for the day,” stated Mudie. “Part of what made Team Nebraska so special was that one of the team members is a WORKS Fellow herself!”

The final day of the activation was spent at the PGA Championship at Valhalla Golf Club. The WORKS Fellows attended and assisted with PGA WORKS Beyond the Green. The idea behind these events is to increase youth participation and diversify the sport. The event was hosted at PGA Club within the PGA Championship grounds with about 60 students in attendance. The event featured activations, a live panel, and a lunch with fantastic leaders such as Krissi Florian, Vice President of Production Management at CBS Sports. The aim of this day was to inspire the next generation while educating them on opportunities available to them within the golf industry. Alex Mudie, together with the other WORKS Fellows were fortunate to receive complimentary tickets to the practice round and enjoyed the rest of the day at Valhalla.

This trip was Alex Mudie’s first experience with the PGA HOPE and gave her an insight into the impact the PGA REACH has on our nation’s Veterans and active duty service members. It was an unforgettable trip and a great way to allow the WORKS Fellows to see the dedication that goes into creating a safe space for all who have served and are currently serving.

“The trip opened my eyes to the lifelong effect golf can have, and I am grateful to be a part of such an incredible association.”

Operations Interns

Manny Silva

Hi, My name is Manuel Silva and I am from Pueblo, Colorado. I am a Marine corps veteran who is pursuing my PGA membership! I am in The PGM program at Sam Houston State University. Golf saved my life after the war in Iraq, and during the rehabilitation time after my injuries, I found comfort at the golf course and I want to help others find that same peace. I have three children, ages 9, 12, and 14. They are my why, and the reason I want to be successful in life. My main goal is to be a positive role model for them as well as other people who want to take charge of their life by never giving up on your dreams. My main motto in life is "ONLY GOOD DAYS." I believe we have the choice to never have a bad day. It's my mindset and I hope to pass that along to everyone I come in contact with. Outside of golf my main interest is baseball, going to concerts, and riding BMX bikes with my friends and family.

Matthew Jones

Howdy y'all, my name is Matthew Jones and I was born and raised just North of Houston in Magnolia, TX. I recently graduated from Texas A&M this May with a Bachelors of Science in Sport Management and a Minor in Business. Throughout college I was a part of various organizations such as Sports Management Society and Aggie Men's Alliance. I started playing golf when I was 3 years old and I grew up playing in the STPGA Little Linksters, Junior Tour, and Prestige Tour divisions, as well as other forms of competitive golf which ultimately led me to this internship. I really wanted to pursue this internship for operations experience, but also to give kids and members the experiences I had growing up.

Shelbee Gosselin

Hello, my name is Shelbee Gosselin and I am from Spring, TX. I graduated from Grand Canyon University in Phoenix this past spring semester! Some of my hobbies include helping people in need and volunteering for church. I also love to travel, play instruments, and a fun fact about me is that I have hiked into the Grand Canyon! Last summer I was an intern for NTPGA and loved my experience there. I chose this internship because I wanted to expand my knowledge of golf within different sections, and STPGA seemed to be a great fit for me. I am so excited for the opportunity and blessed that I get to work as an intern for the STPGA!

Sarah Lummus

Hi, y'all! My name is Sarah Lummus and I am from Houston, TX. I am currently a Senior at the University of Texas at Austin, double majoring in Sport Management and Human Dimensions of Organizations with a minor in Business. I love to run, be outside, and spend time with friends and family. I wanted to pursue this internship because sports were such an important part of my life growing up, so I feel beyond privileged to have the opportunity to give kids and members the experiences that I had.

Heyo! My name is Sammy Garza, I’m from Kingwood Texas and am in my senior year at Sam Houston State University with the PGA Golf Management Program. Outside of golf I can usually be found at a car meet or hitting the gym, I also dabble in photography and am a huge dog lover! I chose this internship as I have a passion for junior golf as well as tournaments operations and the STPGA blends the two together perfectly. As a former little linksters and junior tour golfer I couldn’t be more excited for all the opportunities this internship offers!

Valentina Martinez Otto

Hi! My name is Valentina Martinez Otto, I have lived in Seattle, WA most of my life, but I was actually born in Mexico City. I will be graduating in 2025 from Florida State University with a bachelor’s degree in marketing. The highlight of my college experience has been getting the chance to spend my freshman year abroad in Italy and Spain for 11 months. Clearly, I really enjoy traveling, but I also enjoy spending time with friends and family, fashion, and golfing for fun. Choosing this internship was an easy decision for me because I get to work in digital media and golf… two hobbies of mine! I look forward to growing through the STPGA Internship and meeting everyone involved in the industry. I am so excited to explore more of Southern Texas, but as always, go Noles!

Abby Wolfe

Hello! My name is Abby Wolfe, I am from Omaha, Nebraska, but currently attend school at Minnesota State University where I play collegiate volleyball. I will graduate this December with my bachelor's degree in Sports Management with a Marketing Minor. When I am not busy with volleyball, I enjoy going out with my friends, golfing casually, trying new restaurants, and hanging out by the lake or pool. I chose this internship as I wanted a change of scenery from the Midwest and have always wanted to live in Texas. This summer will be interesting going from the freezing Minnesota winters to the Houston humidity, but I am ready! This internship will allow me to grow my skills in digital media and as a person which will help me in my professional career. Cannot wait for this summer opportunity to work with Southern Texas PGA!

“Swing Towards The Target!”

PGA Director of Instruction, Nick Trice, finds inspiration in individuals striving for personal and communal growth.

Since being elected to PGA of America Membership in 2019, Nick has found his passion for instructing and mentoring. Nick took a non-traditional route to becoming a teaching professional, starting with teaching chess in elementary schools, that is where he was presented with the opportunity to work in golf.

From that moment, Nick was hooked on teaching golf, and more importantly, its transformative power. To Nick, the game of golf has taught him that force and strain are not useful tools for achieving something. There is a subtle mindset, ease of movement, and surrender that will allow you to navigate the obstacles that golf and life introduce. Nick has personally seen how the game can transform an individual’s life as it is through golf that he was able to find peace and harmony following the passing of some of his close friends.

“This loss drove me to look for peace, deeper understanding, and a certain harmony with nature,” expresses Trice. “Golf has been instrumental in this process.”

Understanding the healing and therapeutic power golf holds, Nick now shares that power with our Veterans through PGA HOPE. For Nick, PGA HOPE holds deep personal significance as both his grandfathers served in the military and this is a way to give back to people like them who served our country.

Through PGA HOPE, Nick finds fulfillment in giving back to veterans, connecting with their determination and discipline, and spreading joy. As a PGA HOPE Lead Instructor, Nick finds immense joy in his role.

“Our recurring PGA Hope class is my favorite time of the week,” shares Nick, PGA HOPE Lead Instructor. “We get to connect and bring joy through the beautiful game of golf and it continues to act as a guiding light for the energy I bring to coaching each day.”

Nick envisions building a supportive community for veterans to grow, compete, and heal through golf. Nick’s motto, "Swing Towards The Target," reflects his belief in setting clear goals and moving purposefully towards them, both on and off the golf course. Nick and the team at Golfinity are projected to serve 200 Veterans in 2024, making them the largest PGA HOPE facility in Southern Texas with no plans on stopping soon.

“One of my goals is to grow PGA HOPE Southern Texas into the largest Veteran-serving operation in Texas. I hope to double the amount of Veterans served next year,” shared Trice when asked about his goals as a PGA HOPE Lead Instructor. “I believe that PGA HOPE is just the start of something that can act as a hub for veterans to build community, learn, compete, grow, and heal.”

To Veterans and PGA of America Members considering getting involved with PGA HOPE, Nick enthusiastically encourages participation. “Do it! Do it for community, exercise, good laughs, trying something new, accepting a new challenge, and potentially finding a lifetime of joy through a game that offers deep insight on this great journey!”

Scott Archer, PGA Running TCS New York City Marathon on Behalf of PGA of America REACH Foundation

SPRING, TX (May 14, 2024) - Southern Texas PGA Member, Scott Archer, is headed to New York City in November for one of the world’s biggest marathons. Archer, Assistant Executive Director for the Southern Texas PGA, will be representing the Section at the 2024 TCS New York City Marathon on November 3. He is one of 15 PGA of America Members from across the country running in the marathon, representing the PGA of America’s 501(c)(3) charitable foundation, PGA of America REACH Foundation. The Foundation is an Official Partner of the TCS New York Marathon for the seventh consecutive year, and the PGA of America Members running in November aim to raise over $150,000 for PGA of America REACH Foundation programming.

“I’m beyond excited for this opportunity to put my mental fortitude and physical fitness to the test, but more importantly, I’m honored to have the opportunity to represent the PGA of America and Southern Texas PGA on the national stage,” said Archer who has worked for the STPGA since 2018.

“PGA of America REACH Foundation and the Programs they conduct are near and dear to my heart, having delivered these on a local level to our consumers of Southern Texas. I also grew up in the Southern Texas PGA Junior Golf Program playing in Beaumont under the watchful eye of Ed Campbell. It is truly a blessing to be able to contribute to fundraising for this organization and to give back in a meaningful way.”

Celebrating Excellence: Two Outstanding Scholars Recognized at Players Dinner During the Insperity Invitational.

SPRING ,TX (MAY 9, 2024) - A week ago, two junior golfers had a once in a lifetime opportunity.

The Players Dinner, also known as “the best night in golf”, is a highlight of the Insperity Invitational. Emceed by legendary sportscaster, Jim Nantz, the night turned into a celebration of academic and athletic achievements.

Executive Director of the Insperity Invitational, Bryan Naugle, took center stage to commend the dedication and achievements of the inaugural Insperity Invitational Scholarship recipients.

"We are thrilled to recognize Benjamin and Jaycee for their exceptional achievements both on and off the field," stated Insperity Invitational Executive Director, Bryan Naugle. "Their unwavering dedication to the game of golf and remarkable accomplishments make them incredibly deserving of this scholarship."

Benjamin has been a member of the STPGA Junior Golf program since 2016 and is currently a Senior at Stratford High School in Houston, where he is the captain of the golf team. He will be continuing his education and golfing career in the fall at Dallas Baptist University. During Ben’s career with the STPGA he has 46 top-10 finishes and represented the STPGA in two Ben Hogan Cup Matches against the Northern Texas PGA, making him one of only 7 players to have ever qualified for this team event twice!

Jaycee Jenkins is currently a Senior at Rosehill Christian School in Tomball and will be attending Palm Beach Atlantic University to play collegiate golf in the fall. She has been a member of the Southern Texas PGA Junior Golf program since 2014 and has collected 13 first place finishes, with a notable win coming at the Srixon Billiard Factory Prestige Tour Turkey Shootout at Moody Gardens Golf Course in 2023. She is also a two-time participant in the Insperity Junior Pro-Am.

“When I received the call informing me that I had been selected out of all the numerous applicants I couldn’t express or formulate how excited and honored I was to receive this scholarship,” expressed Jaycee gratefully. “This scholarship means the world to me and by receiving it, I will be able to pursue my dreams in ways I never thought I would be able to, and I will forever be thankful to Insperity Invitational and the STPGA for making this possible.”

PGA REACH Southern Texas Awards $297,500 in College Scholarships!

The STPGA and its partners surpass last year’s record and continue to empower junior golfers to reach new heights in both their golfing and academic pursuits!

SPRING, TEXAS – The PGA REACH Southern Texas Scholarship Program is excited to announce the awarding of 63 scholarships to 60 individuals to the cumulative amount of $297,500! This amount is a massive increase of $87,000 compared to last year’s program and we are so appreciative of all our partner’s support! These funds will help these 60 young adults continue their academic careers during the 2024-2025 school year!

“Another record year for the STPGA and we could not be happier for these deserving young men and women,” said Bryan Minnick, President of the Southern Texas PGA. “From fellow PGA of America Members supporting this program to other organizations involved with golf, I just want to say thank you!”

Since 1999, the PGA REACH Southern Texas Scholarship Program has been a beacon of opportunity, granting over 530 scholarships totaling more than $1,991,500 to ambitious juniors pursuing higher education. These scholarships recognize the exemplary achievements and outstanding character of graduating high school seniors and current college students.

The STPGA extends heartfelt appreciation to the Hannon Cup Association for their continued investment of $110,000 this year, resulting in the awarding of 14 scholarships at various levels. Under the leadership of PGA of America Members Steve Termeer and Brent Buckman, this Association sets the standard for community engagement and support for the educational aspirations of young men and women.

In collaboration with the Hannon Cup Association, the STPGA is thrilled to announce a forthcoming Scholarship Luncheon later this summer. This event aims to honor the scholarship recipients, foster meaningful interaction with trustees, and highlight the profound impact these scholarships have on the lives of the winners and their families.

“I am honored and grateful to receive a scholarship this year,” said Cole Cantu, recipient of the J.L. Lewis Scholarship. “It's going to make a huge difference for me as I embark on my college journey. The STPGA has been instrumental in shaping me into the person I am today. Through their support, I've not only gained valuable skills but also formed lasting friendships and discovered my sense of purpose.”

In 2024, the PGA REACH Southern Texas Scholarship Program experienced significant growth with the introduction of a variety of new scholarships. Insperity Invitational made a remarkable impact with an inaugural investment of $20,000. Recipients, Benjamin Potter, and Jaycee Jenkins were honored at the Player’s Dinner held in conjunction with the Insperity Invitational on May 2nd, in the presence of golf legends such as Jack Nicklaus, Lee Trevino, Gary Player, and more.

Abraham Ancer collaborated with the STPGA to make a lasting impact not only on individuals pursuing higher education but also on their entire families. Through a generous investment of $15,000, three scholarships were awarded at different levels, exemplifying a commitment to educational advancement and community empowerment.

We also want to thank PGA Professional, Mark Duranski and BraeBurn Country Club who awarded $3,500 in scholarships this year as well as Judy and Palmer Moe for their $3,000 investment. Lastly, the JL Lewis Scholarship saw an increase due to the awesome work at the Cimarron Hills Pro-Am earlier this spring!

“Thank you to everyone that supports these scholarships,” said Thomas Hutton, Executive Director for the STPGA. “We have so many people involved in this program, and we could not be happier with this year’s outcome.”

PGA HOPE SPOTLIGHT: GREG HILLER, PGA

TPC San Antonio PGA Director of Instruction, Greg Hiller, is helping to improve the quality of life for those who have served their country. His efforts not only benefit the Veterans themselves but also contribute to building a stronger and more inclusive golf community.

A great way Greg and the team at TPC San Antonio further give back to the Veteran community is through their annual PGA HOPE Clinic in conjunction with the Valero Texas Open. This year they hosted 50 PGA HOPE graduates for a free instructional clinic featuring PGA TOUR Professionals Chandler Phillips and Tom Whitney.

FIRST CHAMPIONSHIP OF THE YEAR IS IN THE BOOKS!

On April 28th, the culmination of talent and dedication was celebrated as eleven champions were crowned at the 2024 Spring Series Championship held at The Clubs of Kingwood (Forest Course). This prestigious event took place on Saturday, April 27th - Sunday, April 28th and brought together over 170 junior golfers ranging from ages 6 to 18, hailing from various metros of Southern Texas.

PGA HOPE Spotlight: Greg Hiller

"Above All Else, Have Fun"

PGA Director of Instruction Greg Hiller wants to help veterans with their golf game in a way that brings joy to their lives.

Greg Hiller, a PGA of America Member since 2014, has been hooked on golf since he was 10 years old and hasn't looked back since. Hiller was first introduced to the game by his godfather when he visited him in Minnesota each summer.

“My godfather took me golfing a few times and introduced the game to me,” said Hiller who teaches at TPC San Antonio. “I was hooked right away. After we would finish playing, I would continue to hit balls in their backyard into the evening.”

Greg used his passion for the game to propel him into beginning a career as a golfer. He went on to play collegiate golf for North Dakota State University and Texas Lutheran University, before turning professional in 1997. Hiller won seven times on various mini-tours and played in some Nationwide Tour events, as well as the 2003 U.S. Open. at Olympia Fields Country Club. Greg eventually found his passion for teaching, leading him to his current role as PGA Director of Instruction at TPC San Antonio.

Now in his time at TPC San Antonio, Greg has found a new passion for the game through PGA HOPE. Through PGA HOPE, Greg has been able to have a direct impact on saving lives.

“PGA HOPE is a way for me to give back to the veterans that have given so much to all of us and served our country,” stated Hiller. “One of the other great things about the program is how grateful they are for what we do for them and how we get our participants to enjoy the game of golf and have fun.”

A great way Greg and the team at TPC San Antonio further give back to the veteran community is through their annual PGA HOPE Clinic in conjunction with the Valero Texas Open. This clinic included a question-and-answer session, shots hit by the TOUR players, and insight from Greg Hiller. This experience is more than just a golf clinic; it's a chance for the veterans to connect with the broader golf community and feel appreciated for their service.

“So many of the veterans love the environment that golf helps create. We want to expand that for them, and PGA HOPE helps do that,” said Hiller.

By expanding opportunities for veterans to engage with the game, Greg is helping to improve the quality of life for those who have served their country. His efforts not only benefit the veterans themselves but also contribute to building a stronger and more inclusive golf community.

Cimarron Hills Pro-Am Raises $75,000 for PGA REACH Southern Texas

J.L. Lewis’ impact on the game continues as the event now supports all 4 pillars PGA REACH Southern Texas!

GEORGETOWN, TX (April 18) – On April 5, Cimarron Hills Golf and Country Club hosted the Annual Cimarron Hills Pro-Am benefitting the J.L. Lewis Scholarship and PGA REACH Southern Texas and raised over $75,000, a new record for this event!

The event started 14 years ago when Chris de Keratry, PGA Director of Golf wanted to host a big event at his facility and help raise money for PGA REACH Southern Texas. The event then grew four years ago when Dawn Lewis approached Chris about wanting to make an impact on junior golfers while honoring her late husband, PGA Professional J.L. Lewis.

“The event has really took off when we joined forces with Dawn Lewis and tied her husband’s name to the event,” said de Keratry. “J.L. Lewis’ impact on the game in Austin and in Southern Texas lives on with these scholarships and we are just happy to host a fun and enjoyable event.”

This year’s event featured over 170 players on Friday April 5th with each group featuring either a STPGA Professional, Touring Professional, or friend of J.L. Lewis. The big hit this year was the Thursday night kick-off party that featured country artist Kevin Fowler. The night allowed for everyone to network, listen to some great music, and share the impact that this event has on people within the community.

“Chris, Dawn, and Cimarron Hills do an awesome job with this event, and we appreciate their support of impacting lives through our Foundation,” said Thomas Hutton, Executive Director of the Southern Texas PGA. “They engage with the community from a partnership perspective, they run a fun event, and they raise money that supports our cause.”

This year’s fund will allow an even greater impact on our Foundation as it not only will grow the J.L. Lewis Scholarship from 4 winners to 7 winners but it will be the first time it supports the other three pillars of our Foundation.

This event will allow the STPGA to start the first ever PGA HOPE Cup that will feature veterans that have gone through our highly successful veteran program called PGA HOPE. The money will also be used to help fund 100 junior golfers with tournament entries into the STPGA Junior Golf Program. Lastly, our programs are not possible without our internship program and money will be used to continue to support this program and ensure the program is first class!

“We are not able to positively impact lives without funds to support our programs,” continued Hutton. “We are so grateful for everyone’s time, the local sponsors of the event, and everyone’s support.”

The J.L. Lewis Scholarship in 2024 will mark the fourth year that this scholarship will be awarded, bringing the total to $79,000 awarded. Southern Texas PGA Members continue to be the backbone of the industry by running high quality facilities, events like this, and raising money to impact lives. Our Foundation has gone through a rebrand and is now called PGA of America REACH Foundation Southern Texas. While this is a new name, we still have the same mission! PGA REACH Southern Texas is coming off a record year of impacting lives, and we are excited to continue to do so through an elevation in communication with our monthly Foundation Newsletters!

We aim to continue to elevate our Foundation, as well as further our storytelling of our four pillars: Junior Golf, College Scholarships, PGA HOPE, and Employment Opportunities.

COLLEGE SCHOLARSHIPS

The Southern Texas PGA Scholarship Program has been providing higher education scholarships since 1999 to golfers and non-golfers alike, and in that time, has awarded 465 scholarships and $1,691,000.

We're thrilled to share we have received a remarkable number of scholarship applications. We have passed the total number of applications received in 2023 with over 170 total applicants!

As our trustees begin the review process, we're honored to play a part in supporting individuals' pursuit of their educational goals. Each application represents a unique story, aspiration, and potential, and we're eager to delve into them with care and consideration.

Stay tuned as we navigate through these applications and work towards empowering deserving individuals on their academic journey. Together, we continue impacting lives though golf and helping juniors further their education and get closer to their dreams!

STARTING 2024 STRONG

We're off to a fantastic start this year! Our Junior Golf membership has already passed 2,700 members only 3 months into the year!

In addition to our growing membership, we've already conducted over 130 tournaments so far this year. It's been incredible to see so many new and familiar faces out on the course!

Looking ahead, we're excited to continue welcoming new members and organizing more exciting tournaments and events. We can't wait to see what the rest of the year holds for us!

STPGA JUNIOR GOLFERS IN THE DRIVE, CHIP & PUTT NATIONAL FINALS

On March 22, 2024 the STPGA hosted the STPGA DCP Media Day at Sand Hill Farm. This DCP Media Day highlighted three members of the STPGA Junior Golf program who have earned the right to compete at the Drive, Chip and Putt National Finals.

Hayes Pethtel (Age 11) of Belton, Waits Rodriguez (Age 9) of Houston and Texas Terry (Age 11) of Austin are 3 of 80 competitors across the country that have earned the opportunity to compete at Augusta National Golf Club in Augusta, Georgia on April 7th, 2024.

CIMARRON HILLS PRO-AM

The 2024 Cimarron Hills Pro-Am Supporting PGA REACH Southern Texas and the J.L. Lewis Memorial Scholarship Fund will take place on Friday, April 5th.

The Southern Texas PGA believes the opportunity to participate in our junior golf programs should not be limited only to those who can afford to play a comprehensive junior golf schedule. Therefore, PGA REACH Southern Texas would like to offer financial assistance to those juniors who are limited due to financial constraints.

Each application is asked a series of questions about their financial situation and reason for applying. PGA Reach Southern Texas is trying to provide as many opportunities to deserving young men and women to play golf and experience the joys that come with it. Please understand that by applying for this grant, all applicants may not receive funds.

The application window closes April 1st.

Creating a Safe and Empowering Community for Active Military and Veterans Through the Game of Golf

PGA HOPE Ambassadors play a pivotal role in bringing the healing power of golf to veterans, instilling hope and fostering a sense of camaraderie among those who have served their country. Among these dedicated Ambassadors stands Michael Moore, an enthusiastic leader with an immense desire to serve.

To PGA HOPE Ambassador Michael Moore, PGA HOPE is an opportunity to establish an environment that truly values and appreciates the sacrifices of these unique individuals, our Nation’s veterans.

For Michael, golf unintentionally came into his life, with his love for the game developing in 2020. As a person who heavily enjoys being outside in nature, he began to crave more variety in the activities he could take part in, leading him to a nearby golf course.

“After going to the course every morning for sixteen weeks of continuous "short game" practice, I was hooked. It's what led me to PGA HOPE,” states Moore, Steering Committee Member for the PGA HOPE Ambassador Program.

The biggest lesson Michael has learned through the game is that temperament and self-control are crucial. The ability to compartmentalize the feelings created on the course but still experience and learn from every stroke is a great exercise to be practiced off the course in life as well.

Michael’s link to PGA HOPE is due to his service in the Navy. Michael served in the U.S. Navy specializing in the aviation and surface warfare communities. During his service career, Michael was recognized for his distinguished service, leadership, and commitment to excellence, and now post military service, he continues to serve the public through his role as a PGA HOPE Ambassador.

“Being an Ambassador affords me the opportunity to serve as a liaison and advocate for the program and the veterans. It's a responsibility very dear to me as I have served my fellow veterans for more than two decades in various capacities,” said Moore when asked what being a PGA HOPE Ambassador means to him.

Michael is truly a cornerstone for PGA HOPE Southern Texas through his role as an Ambassador, and it shows in his passion for growing the program and impacting as many lives as possible. Golf is more than just a game—it's a vehicle for healing, camaraderie, and hope. To anyone considering getting involved in PGA HOPE in any capacity, Michael hopes you, “keep an open mind and give it a shot. It does not cost you anything but time. You will not regret the decision.”

Changing Veteran’s Lives One Swing at A Time

Nothing brings greater joy to PGA HOPE Lead Instructor Jonathan Shoffner than seeing the smiles on the veterans' faces while learning the game of golf.

Since becoming a PGA of America Member in 2016, Jonathan has been growing the game and sharing his joy of the game every day. Jonathan first started playing golf when he was 10 years old thanks to his grandfather Jasper Greeson. Jasper was a United States Army Veteran and Purple Heart recipient without whom Jonathan would have never had the opportunity to learn the game of golf.

Once in the golf industry, Jonathan was driven by his relationship with his grandfather and his passion to give back to those who have served our country. This drive led Jonathan to find a way to give back with PGA HOPE. Through PGA HOPE Jonathan has been able to impact over 100 veterans’ lives. He has embraced the values of PGA HOPE and his service to our veteran community and uses it as a fountain of constant inspiration.

“I am inspired by a veterans' desire to learn the game of golf for the first time. The sacrifices they made to our country inspire me to be a better person,” states Shoffner, PGA Teaching Professional at The Clubs at Kingwood.

Entering 2023, Jonathan had a goal to not only impact veterans through PGA HOPE programming but also to provide a post-graduation experience to keep these veterans on the golf course. Jonathan executed this goal by creating the first annual Veteran Cup that featured over 70 veterans in its inaugural playing. Another great achievement was being recognized as the 2023 Southern Texas PGA Patriot Award recipient.

“This award truly is special to me,” said Shoffner. “It is an honor to be able to provide golf instruction to the veterans who have served our country, and even more special to be recognized for it.”

Apart from Jonathan’s service at a Section level, he has worked over the years to provide as many opportunities to veterans as possible. Through this mission, Jonathan has supported Folds of Honor by raising over $50,000 in donations, competed in a 100-hole golf marathon to raise funds for veteran organizations, and provided free 30-minute lessons to veterans at the club.

“I would like to continue to grow the veterans program not only at The Clubs of Kingwood but throughout the community,” said Shoffner when asked about his goals.

Jonathan truly is an example to follow when it comes to finding your passion and giving back to your community. Jonathan views golf as an outlet for all ages, races, and genders. He has the personal philosophy that anyone can learn the game at any age and circumstance if given the opportunity. If there is one thing Jonathan hopes people embrace, it is to, “Be all that you can be to everyone you encounter. Serve, give, and bring joy to as many people as possible.”
